Something that has always bothered me is the fact that most people dont value the life of an insect. I dont get it? Their life is just as important as an animal or a human in my opinion.

They are just trying to get by, doing their thing. And all of a sudden someone squishes them, its fucking disturbing humans can so easily take their life away like that. Like they are nothing. Just an annoyance.

Ive always tried to save every bug i find in my home by putting them outside. Or a poor beetle stuck on its back, I'll always flip them over so it can go on its way.

I can relate to flies, everyone hates them and they are annoying. But its not their fault they were born a fly. Sorry for the random vent, just a thought that was on my mind.

I kill insects all the time. Of course this is never done in a tortuous way, I take them out as quickly as possible. This whole world is a curse and they're better off not being here. I think all of life is mistake and should be removed. It's really the only way to end suffering but not allowing it to exist in the first place. Think of how their lives would end in nature. Being ripped to pieces by a predator is a horrific way to go out, or having some spider paralyze you and eat you slowly. I'm sure everyone can think of the brutal ways nature works. Being squished and dying in 1 second is a blessing. I only wish someone would return the favor to me.

Sometimes they make it difficult because they invade homes and such. But I certainly agree, let's strive to avoid killing them as much as we practically can. It's possible that they can suffer and it's best that we minimise suffering as much as possible.

I remember all the bugs I've killed unintentionally and realized it. And I'm very sorry.

But the tiger mosquito I hate it, hate it, hate it... when I get bitten my ankles swell badly or my wrists swell up and I spend several days without sleep and I'm left with the mark of the stung for three months.. I hate them because no one helps me and they laugh at me or say that I did it to myself (but what happens to the others?).

I couldn't sleep tonight either because of the itching (it stung my neck yesterday), I'm tired. And if I see it for sure I give it a hard time.. the other insects have done absolutely nothing to me and they keep piling up around the house without any opposition from me.

But the tiger mosquito would sign right now to exterminate it from the European continent.

//

Jo recordo tots els insectes que he matat sense voler i me n'he adonat.

kinda fucked youd go out of your way to kill them, why not just leave them alone and let nature take its course? the insects arent really suffering, theyre just following their instincts and reacting to their surroundings
if the death is instant i guess it doest really matter but still, no reason to go out of your way to do that imo

I do this but for my own sake. By being kind to all lifeforms you help yourself to get free from the nightmare of life, which doesn't stop at death. This Buddhist principle makes sense, since dukkha or life is basically conflict and separation.

I always hated spiders and used them to realize we aren't so different, for better or for worse. Humans are actually way more sinister than spiders in how they can torture or enslave other lifeforms.

I'm the kind of guy who will chase down a grasshopper in a crowded shopping centre while everyone stares, to catch it and put it outside.

If I can offer some advice rn it's this, mix some neem meal into your soils if you have indoor plants, otherwise you will likely end up with a fungus gnat infestation. It only takes one to lay it's larvae in the soil and then... Suddenly overnight you will have billions of extremely annoying, tiny little flying insects EVERYWHERE, and it will drive you absolutely mad if you don't get rid of them somehow. Not a good position to be in if you're adverse to killing things.

While I think that's still good, I was told by a buddhist master years ago, that it basically doesn't count if you do it for yourself, the good karma / cosmic kudos.

He was talking about it to some of the young monks, who openly admitted they only follow buddhist teaching in order to earn themselves blessings, wholesome karma, or save their own arses from some kind of naraka.

He reckons you have to do things with bodhicitta, purely for the benefit of other sentient beings, out of compassion for them. It kind of shocked me to hear because I was under the impression that a huge portion of buddhists follow the teachings to benefit themselves in various ways, first and foremost.

He said if you think you should be a do-gooder in order to get into heaven, there's a church down the road!

1 fact I didn't know about 'Leopard Slugs'
It's well known that leopard slugs, like the majority of land-based snails and slugs, are hermaphrodites – meaning that both sexual organs are contained in the same individual

As long as bugs leave me alone - I leave them be. Unless of course it's the annoying flies I don't care then - Smashy Smashy I go.

I used to think like you but then I realized the reason I'm suffering is because of my excessive consciousness, as compared with an insect.

I'm sure they do not suffer as acutely/chronically as you and I do whether in life or at moment of premature death by human intervention.

So I think little nowadays about swatting the fly or two to keep the annoyances out of my residence.

Honestly I'll try to save insects but not if I feel like they are going to infest the house. Always loved the fun 'fact' (not entirely sure it's true) that all the ants in the world would weigh the same amount as all the humans.

I admire your compassion though and I agree- our view on life is pretty skewed. Imagine most people would try to rescue a butterfly but squash a mosquito. Maybe we'd squash butterflies if they drank our blood though... The world I imagine would be in a lot more trouble if all the insects died than if we did.

Concur dear friend of nature. Every time I see a Dragonfly flitting near a pond, im struck by there incredible skills. I believe they existed before humankind arrived and yet lifespan is low. Life is relative. They do not fear death. Only humans fear death.

You may know that im an advocate of assisted dying, in part because i want to kill my own arse. I was wondering how Buddhism views assisted dying when our beloved pets are ill?. Buddhism seems to view human suffering withinq theirq understanding of the noble.truths. ?

Our actions towards insects/animals tend to reveal just how hypocritical the whole "sanctity of life" crap really is. George Carlin had a good rant on it that summed it up better than I can.

Personally, I try to avoid doing harm to animals or insects unless they pose a problem or danger to me. Recent case in point would be the ants taking over my kitchen which forced me to resort to using ant baits. When I lived alone I was able to keep things clean enough that I avoided their attention, but my unrequested roommate can't seem to grasp the concept of completely cleaning up after themselves to avoid leaving them a target. All other insects I try to take outside or in the case of spiders, just let them chill since they are themselves doing insect control via nature.
