I was wondering whether anyone here is afraid of the dark. When it's dark, I feel like monsters will come out of mirrors and windows if I look at them. They can only come out if we look at each other. Anyone else afraid of the dark in some way?

Yes and for the exact same reasons. Unfortunately I'm also more scared of dim lighting or a nightlight because the thought of seeing a monster terrifies me too. :aw:

Not too much, I try not to think about it too much when I'm in the dark and I kind of turn off my brain. Cause If I do start thinking my mind will go crazy and I'll think the same stuff you do lol.

sometimes when I go out when it's dark already I'm afraid someone might attack me and my imaginations/visions go a bit wild. Anxiety:(

I actually love the dark, makes me feel more peaceful and quiets my mind. Gives me a break from light sensitivity I guess

It was night time and I was last to leave locking the door of a multi use building in a rural area and heard a door open and close from somewhere on the 2nd floor. Once up the stairs In order to turn the lights on you had to walk into the junction of two extremely dark hallways that were lined with closed doors. It was delightfully scary asking if anyone was there and being greeted by that throat grabbing kind of silence. There has been a few times when it's felt like something has carefully gotten onto the bed and laid down next to me and one time the crickets and other insects outside stopped right before I felt it.

Yes. I often experience sleep paralysis, and I almost always hallucinate when it happens. I see stuff like 7ft tall headless people, people with missing eyes and shit like that. However, if I sleep with a nightlight I experience less hallucinations. My experiences with sleep paralysis is what has made me afraid of the dark. Everytime I enter a dark room I'm afraid I'll see one of the hallucinations. Hasn't happened so far, thankfully.

I hate the dark and I always sleep with a light on. In winter months I hate going to bed before it's getting light outside - hence the reason why I'm up until the early hours. I'm scared of someone breaking in, as the area I live in isn't that great.

No, quite the contrary, I feel very comfortable in the dark, even to the extent of keeping my windows shuttered during daylight. Love the shorter days during winter too.

My brothers scared me growing up so I became scared of the dark, but I have managed it to the point that I can tolerate it in my apartment.

However I'm afraid of outside darkness. I can't tolerate nighttime beach walks or overnight camping trips or poorly-lit parking lots. The threats are real.

A good while back I did, a combination of sleepy hollow, that cheesy disney boogie man show, and darkness falls (that movie where the tooth fairy dwells in the dark and will kill you if you are in it at all) scarred me as a kid. I've managed to essentially conquer that fear as an adult by going for long walks at night, but having anything moving fast at night towards me still gives me the shakes a bit.

No, i love the darkness. In fact i have good memories about going to walk along the countryside at very, very night. Fun fact: once i was the scary thing in the night. I suprised a friend very bad.

Yes, a little bit. If I'm indoors, not so much, but if I'm outside, in a poorly lit area, I'm afraid of what might jump out of the dark.

Not exactly scared, but I'm deeply uncomfortable in dark places, specially at night. I don't really know how to describe this feeling, but in my adult life, I could probably count with my hands the amount of nights that I've slept without a dim light or a computer/tv screen to keep me company.

I've heard that people with anxiety experience fear of the dark more often than average people. But I guess that this is a normal fear to have since us humans are not exactly nocturnal creatures and probably used to be prey to things that lurked in the dark.

No. I've spent a lot of time when I was younger camping under bivouac in somewhat wilder places. You quickly lose any fear of the dark. I learned the small noises the night makes and how to walk safely in the dark using peripheral vision. Though TBH, the first few times camping alone I was terrified.
I do however, fear the night time, simply because I have such bad sleep issues. Being awake half the night is when all the worst thoughts come and mock all the efforts I make during the day.
Last night I remember shouting in frustration at all the noises of the night outside my window. At the moment it appears to be rats. Scratching. All night long.

Most of the time i feel comfortable and safe in the dark but sometimes I think there is a monster in my closet or under my bed, like if I was still a kid. Then I always have to look if its clear before I can sleep.

Yes. I am seriously afraid of the dark. I'm not sure exactly why though.

I'd assume it's the feeling of helplessness, the same way the ocean scares me. Sure I may be a nearly perfect species for the set circumstances I live in, but once I enter someone else's territory, I'm no longer at the top. I am not necessarily afraid of anything happening, it's just the "what ifs" that cloud my reasonable judgement.

it's pretty odd to think that long ago, humans were scared of the outside world, and believed caves were a god-send. But now? Caves are creepy as fuck.

I have a very wild imagination, but it only shows in the dark.

Used to when I was a kid.
Thanks to a horror game I had played at the time, I used to think all sorts of nasty things are waiting for me in the darkness.
Not anymore though! :smiling:

I don't really like any of my senses being cut off, it doesn't feel safe. Also my brain tends to start trying to fill in the gaps when I can't see or it's too quiet, and that's never fun.
