Title.

Most of the ones I've bought just spend chapters and chapters talking about how amazing their advice is, and I just get fed up of reading and put the book down.

It's philosophy, not exactly self help but see if you like it.

I personally found 'The Power of Now' helpful- by Eckart Tolle. It was ages ago I read it though.

From a philosophical perspective... is it "self-help" if you read a book written by someone else? Is it self-help if you need help finding that book in the first place?

Not a critique of the OP... just an interesting philosophical angle that I've always considered...

EXACTLY. That's the same way I feel about them. I believe a good fiction book, like a Dostoevskij novel, can teach you way more than a self help book can.

Currently reading Good Vibes, Good Life cuz i got it for £1 and it's pretty good…? General consensus seems to be that it's shallow and dubious but I personally am finding it kind of therapeutic (?)

Myth of Sisyphus, not excatly "self help" since it's technically philosophy, but it's helped me.

The Obstacle Is The Way. It's about moving through things one step at the time, it has helped me when i was feeling "stuck". Much love <3

Idk, maybe books about feminism? veganism? ultra processed foods? I don't really read but self help books seem totally useless to me. I'd rather read up and learn how to be a better person to the beings around me. That helps me personally, I know it helps, so I'm reading more about how to do that.

Honestly this isn't an easy question to answer because it depends on the reason a person is suffering in the first place. One book that helped me understand my experiences is Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay Gibson. It's a book outlining certain forms of emotional neglect, but it probably won't help someone who isn't suffering due to emotional neglect.
