If thats the case how are they still spouting shit like the suicide hotline? The people in my life who know my situation wouldn't be caught dead suggesting nonsense like that.

They are apart of the people who think the hotline is effective. The point is that they don't care about the everyday systems that are failing people, they just want this site taken down.

As one-sided as the NYT article is, it does raise some valid points--like any large community, SaSu has cons and pros. Misery loves company, and this place can be an echo chamber where encouraging members to seek help and try everything before suicide can lead to attacks (by some, not most). There also have been threads here noting how many young people (kids, let's be honest) are on this site. Who doesn't cringe at the threads like "I want to ctb but not sure how to do it without my parents hearing from the next room." And objectively, many on here are considering suicide when their problems may well be temporary and treatable. Someone in the depths of depression may not think so, but depression doesn't let you think very clearly. And who knows what sorts of new treatments are just around the corner for those disorders, ketamine, microdosing, cog behavioral therapy, etc. There is a revolution in treatments just beginning.

And for all the talk on here about being pro-choice, one sees little consideration for the two basic criteria needed for a choice to be meaningful--capacity and information.

Finally, as others have mentioned elsewhere, for all the talk of tolerance, there is a ton of misogyny on here. If this site is related to incel forums, that does explain a lot.

Not defending the NYT article by any stretch. It doesn't touch on the lack of mental health care and related stigma in the states, the systematic problems that drive many to develop diseases of despair (like addiction) that lead to health problems and suicide, and the lack of medical aid in dying options that lead many to face horrific choices at the end of life or for those suffering with debilitiating chronic illness. But there should be room here for self-reflection and improvement as well.

I don't agree with this post 100% but there's a lot here to work with imo, much of the backlash to the obviously one-sided media coverage is angry in tone and while l don't seek to invalidate that, there is certainly room for self-reflection here too.

There is, in my opinion, excessive tolerance to misogyny here. There is also a frequent misunderstanding and misinterpretation of what "pro choice" means. There may not be explicit encouraging of ctb but there is an over-enthusiasm for it, as reflected in the research questions in goodbye threads and the flippant tallies of the departed, which need not be so readily displayed. Much of the forum content *does* lack maturity and needs to counterbalanced by more thoughtful, level-headed and insightful output. There is *still* a partners thread where people can advertise their vulnerability even *after* a man has pleaded guilty to sexually attacking two women he met through this site - and yes, creeps are in every corner of the Internet, but people here are more desperate, more vulnerable, *easier prey* than they are elsewhere.

Mods can only police so much of this, and it's fair to assume they are very very busy at the present time, but it's on all of us to make this forum what it is, and ultimately we will get the community we deserve - it would do us no harm collectively to reflect on a few things within that article which, as sensationalist and misrepresentative as it was, still contained a couple of very tiny grains of truth.

Shit like this just makes me paranoid and question almost every person I interact with now. They say they want to help but they're manipulating liars by using us to fit their agenda. I want to have sympathy for them cause some of them are grieving parents but they are sick for doing this.

I personally can not have any sympathy with "Emma Davis", or anyone who seeks to do harm to people here purely for their own financial / emotional gain. At least with the grieving parents there is a direct and powerful emotional driver for what they do, which l can understand on a human level. The Emma Davis types are just harmful trash, out for their own entertainment at the expense of others.

This is bizarre, I've spoke with @Harriet on SS. They never gave off any misgivings about the site or tried to persuade me not to ctb. I found them pretty helpful to talk to, I will miss them ngl. They don't appear to have a Twitter account anymore?

Me too Dot. I noticed their name got crossed out last night, I thought they were staying low in response to my comment on Simba's profile, to avoid getting doxxed. I thought maybe they had read that and decided it was good advice for them as well.
