Not gonna lie I love being put under, drifting off right before surgery. I understand it's nothing like dying but sometimes I wish for just as peaceful of a way out permanently. I go under once a year (for the past 4 years) for ongoing surgery and it's something I always look forward to, though waking up not so much !!

Oh my god yes I talked about this here the other day. My insomnia is so bad I look forward to just being knocked unconscious.

I have a lot of health issues as well that have required surgeries and I truly enjoy being knocked out. It's the closest for a little bit that I'll get of sweet relief!

Yes, being put under general anesthesia was very interesting. I remember the moments before, and I remember them putting the mask on me for oxygen. I remember talking to the anesthesiologist, and then I just woke up 6 hours later. I didn't dream and it was like a time I had just ceased to exist for that Period. I like to imagine that is what death is like.

I love GA. I've been under about 4? times and also had "heavy sedation" once (for egg collection during IVF) - that was even more amazing.

Another anesthesia lover checking in here. Any opportunity to be put under, I'll take. That second when it all goes dark, it seems to be the deepest, most peaceful sleep.

Beyond.

Likely how death is.

I wouldn't mind a t shirt that says I  general anesthesia.

My previous botched surgery was 15 hours and I could not remeber anything from that time . i just got up and saw that surgery was unsuccesful like any other surgery that I did . I think CTB by N or even SN should be the same

I always try and fight it to see if I can beat the anaesthesia lol. Its such a peaceful feeling, just slowly drifting off into nothing. Shame it feels like it's over so fast and next thing you're waking up feeling groggy as hell with a bad hangover.

People don't understand how bad insomnia is. I go to bed with anxiety every night. 'Will I be able to sleep?' It is very difficult to try to sleep with the question. If I wake up for any reason, it is very difficult to sleep again.

Has anyone gotten any visions while waking up from general anesthesia? I was seeing a beautiful mountain and there were people talking to me and making me laugh. I felt really really good waking up and I just wanted to go back to that so much. This has happened only once though, I think I've been out 2 more times but then everything was blank and I felt like shit.

That's really interesting but I don't think too uncommon? Still interesting.

Ive been under anesthesia — deep sedation where I was supposed to be out. I actually woke up in the middle of my procedure. It wasn't anything extremely invasive (an endoscopy), but it definitely traumatized me to an extent. I remember seeing my insides on the screen and hearing my doctor talking.

Yes as a kid. I was 9. They didn't talk to me or anything. They ignored me and then just put it on me without warning. But it was so quick until I was unconscious. Maybe 5 seconds I think.

I've been generally anaesthetised about 15 times in my life. Sounds a lot, I suppose, but I am rather long in the tooth, and have been exposed to some risks.
Back in the 1950s and early 60s my dentist would not administer locals, so I had several experiences of general. I found the sensation of losing consciousness very unpleasant indeed. There was no pre-med injection, just straight into the breathing procedure with a mask over my face. I had a semi-conscious sensation of my lungs being supercharged when I breathed in; it was almost as though my lungs would burst on every breath, then just before they did I was able to exhale, but of course I was faced with the next bursting intake of breath. I also had a sensation of rapidly spinning backwards. I was rotating around a horizontal axis placed from side to side just under the seat of the chair, and I felt as though I had to cling on to the arms of the chair. The sense was similar, I later learned, to doing aerobatics. These sensations appeared real to me, and as far as possible in other dental operations I would go without anaesthetic as much as I could - and this was in the days before modern high-speed dental drills !
Speculating on the sensations in later years, I have guessed that the chair spinning may have been an illusion started off by being laid further back to a lying down position as unconsciousness started. The lung bursting sensation, well, I don't know, but maybe dental patients had to be given a hefty single dose in order to be "kept under" throughout the whole procedure, as the nature of the surgery meant that ongoing administration of the gas via trachea was impossible.

My next experience of GA was in late 1960. I had suffered a very nasty compound fracture of my forearm. Displacement of about 90 degrees at about the mid-point of both radius and ulna, with all four broken ends projecting through the skin. It was very painful and shocking, and unfortunately for me I had to go several hours without pain relief. It was such a blessed relief when I received anaesthesia that any negative illusory sensations were hardly a concern. The operation on my arm required the debriding of skin and muscle around the wound site (i.e. the removal of mashed up soft tissue to prevent gangrene), and I still have a large ladder scar, and a hollow in my arm, where this was done.

Moving on to about 1965. I developed an abscess in my throat which was painful, but I tried to ignore it as I was on an Army course which I was keen to complete. However, one morning I awoke unable to speak. Strong antibiotics worked, but I was told that any further delay in treatment might have caused blockage of my trachea, and death through asphyxiation. It was subsequently decided that I should have a tonsillectomy to prevent any recurrence (as I had also suffered from regular tonsillitis on a few occasions.) This operation was carried out in a military hospital in England. I awoke on the operating table. I could not see, but I could feel pain in my throat, and I could hear; somebody said "He's a big chap, should have given him more." I was able to flex a knee and draw up a leg, and felt a pair of hands hold it down. Then out I went again.
When I mentioned this later, it was denied. A fierce ward sister with captains pips and Second World War medal ribbons on her cape told me it never happened.

After that, a few more fractures, ### nasal bone, and a couple of Bennett's Fractures (hand bones, typically suffered as a result of punching something.) I had one of these Bennetts done at a civilian hospital, then another at an RAF hospital in England By now, pre med injections were being given before general anaesthetic and the whole procedure wasn't bad. The pre-meds of those days had a reputation for making you feel a bit woozy.

The RAF also carried out an operation on me in Germany to replace facial bones in the right place after several injuries. What I remember about the anaesthesis on this occasion was that I had cocaine administered up my nose a few hours before going under the knife ! Apparently this was mainly to restrict local blood flow, but I have to say that I enjoyed the sensation and I could understand why people of weak character would take it recreationally, though I was never tempted to do so.

A couple of years back I had general anaesthetic for a double inguinal hernia repair. I was given an injection in the back of my hand, and was told that I would feel an ice cold sensation radiating out from the injection site. I hardly had time to acknowledge, and the next thing I knew I was coming round in a recovery room !

These are my experiences.

I hated being put under general anaesthesia which is one of the reasons why I think that I might not be ready yet sadly.

Just had surgery and it was amazing. God help me if I said anything coming out because that would be hilarious and disturbing. I have also had IV dilaudid several times and I believe is the closest thing to being dead. Just peace, no pain, no memory...just peace

Have had a few too, especially this past year with several coloscopies. Love the drifting off part, not so much the coming back, except once. Am polite and thank everyone, but have a poor reaction to what they're telling me. Now the last one wasn't too nice, gas, it was like something hitting me with a hammer/pumping in my head. It was weird, like an intense headache with a heart beat. Then again a year before it was beautiful. He told me I should think of something nice, then I felt the icy cold coming up my arm, and what I remember shortly before coming by was white light. Really relaxing.

Have also woken during the procedure. Once I asked them to, out of curiousity, just then the probe hit the inside of my colon. Now that hurt, and it cramped. They put me back under. Also woke when my wrist was shattered (right hand was hanging by the skin of my arm). It was so complicated that it took several hours and they needed to call in help. Woke up and remember them tearing at my arm.

PS: Totally agree on insomnia, it's shit.

i tried to fight it once... I felt like my eyelids became so heavy it was nearly impossible, but i managed to keep my eyes open or so i thought... I was just laying there waiting for something to happen. I remember the surgeon was asking: "wheres this screwdriver?"(they were unscrewing the titanium plate in my skull), not much else was going on, but a few moments later they put me on my bunk at the ICU - the surgery was over. Id been out and it was all but a dream...
