i would go to my destination right now if I didn't have to worry about this. The problem is I don't want the landlord (he's a family friend) and my nice parents left with the job of clearing out my place. I feel so trapped and just want relief from this hell

How long will it take you to box your stuff? If that's the only thing in the way why not do it and get it over with? Or, you can donate a lot of your stuff at once to the salvation army. Then it's out of your hands.

What kinds of things can/can't I donate to the Salvation Army?

Where do I get boxes at?

@Volatile Boxes you can get at Walmart, Office Depot, Home Depot, Staples, etc. Here in NY I find perfectly good boxes off the street that businesses throw away. Here's a link to how you can get free boxes too: http://www.unpakt.com/blog/top-7-places-to-find-free-moving-boxes/

Salvation army takes mostly everything including clothes, kitchen tools, sports equipment, etc. I would google what you can and cannot donate with them if you want to be sure.

Donating can be nice but plz not to the salvation army if you can avoid it. They are very bigoted and won't serve or be decent to gay and trans people.

edit: and goodwill can be jerks to disabled people but anywhere else should be fine.

I don't want to make changes in case I fail or back out and need that stuff. Same with closing bank account and canceling phone and everything like that. Same with letters etc as maybe after mailing them I fail or back out. The delayed email services I have tried are not reliable.

And seconding avoid Salvation Army if you care about equal rights/empathy and oppose bigotry.

That hasn't been my experience where I live. The salvation army is located in a diverse neighborhood and every time I've gone there are all different types of people in there. But could just be my location, not sure.

When Cortez entered the new world, he burnt all ships. When the old Swiss decided to leave their homeland, they salted their fields and burnt down their farms.

It helps you finding out whether you have doubts. And focuses the mind if you are serious.

Cortez went on to bloodily conquer the new world. The old Swiss were beaten and forced back by Caesar.

I'm boxing up the stuff that should go to a friend of mine. And I feel like I should pack my figurines for some odd reason even though they're not supposed to go to anyone.

Anything else though - I don't care. Don't have enough boxes anyway.

In your situation, who will be left to clean out your place?

Stories of survivor bias don't help. It's easy to pick out rare and singular examples to make a point. People tend to ignore all the ones who it didn't work out for whilst doing so.

Will your death be hard on her?

I think it will completely destroy her. It will probably mess up my entire family and fuck up my best friend. My mom's the reason I'm sometimes reluctant when it comes to doing it because she really doesn't deserve all that pain. But I can't take it anymore.

You can TRY to live for others but in the end it never works out. If I had kids I would try and hope I could get them to a point they were self sufficient and would be impacted less, but everyone has a breaking point and it's very easy to tell others how much they SHOULD endure. Since I don't have kids that depend on me I am not willing to suffer every second of life so that others who know me don't have to suffer SOMETIMES when thinking of me...but so many people expect that of others or themselves and the math doesn't work out.

Me too but I'm so conflicted. It breaks me that my mom will be so hurt

Hmmm... either you have not read my post well or I don't understand you.

It felt like you were saying I should follow Cortez's path as it would tell me if I was serious and that his path led him to success. In general picking examples like that is suvrvivor bias. For every Cortez that succeeded in his goal there are countless people who fail...but humans like to point out the former whilst ignoring the latter.

I agree with your point, but it was not mine.

I also cited the old Swiss who applied the same strategy and failed miserably. They had to return to a destroyed country.

My point was (obviously not well made, as it was not clear), that there are advantages to the ship burning approach (doubts telling you "I am not ready" or a sharper focus when you are). But there is a price to pay in not hedging (see the old Swiss).

Is this clearer? Do you agree?

I'll just be walking away from it all. The physical world, as I perceive it, is purely a product of my consciousness, which dies when I die. That is my belief anyway.

I agree there are pros and cons to all approaches. It doesn't help me in any way however as you cannot determine which time you will get the pros and which time the cons until it's too late. When it works people like to say they made the smart choice etc...I contend its nothing to do with our smarts...it's luck. Even if 99/100 times something works one way I can be the 1/100 it doesn't work for and I have been that guy enough times to know it doesn't matter what I choose....and risk is never "worth it" unless you win thus it's not worth it in any meaningful way because when you don't win you can't say the same.
