This has always seemed to me like the simplest, easiest, and least painful way to go, is there any reason it's not more common? Of course there's the gruesomeness of it, but you could call 911 in advance to clean up the scene or something. I'm assuming a decent portion of you guys live in America, so why not choose this?
Besides obvious restrictions like a criminal background or failed mental evaluation preventing purchase, why don't people just opt for the firearm method? It has the highest success rate (82.5% and practically 100% with the proper method), and other alternative methods have a high failure rate...
