I'm a big fan of anime (obviously), Hatsune Miku, and reading. Now, two of those things I used to hate with a passion, those being Anime, and reading. So why did I hate them? Because I was taught as a kid that they were evil, and even though I had long become an atheist, those feeling still lingered. At least, until I'd listened to some Japanese song called White Noise, and thought "hey, this ain't so bad" and then asked my sister, who'd been bugging me to watch anime for months by that point, what to start with. Knowing me, she obviously told me to watch the gooner anime Seven Deadly Sins first, and then set me on Peak, Fairy Tail. Now, I'm one of the biggest anime fans out there, even though I rarely watch it these days, preferring the light novels.
I also started listening to Hatsune Miku around the same time, which shaped my entire taste of music because I wasn't a music listener before then. (the reason i put it here is because she fell under the anime umbrella for me back then)
now, for reading, i hated it because i was essentially illiterate until 2nd grade, so it made me feel pretty stupid until then, so I refused to read much until my parents got me a particular book series in 7th grade that I got way too invested in and have loved reading since.

Is there anything that you guys once hated irrationally, or for some stupid or petty reason, but now love? Let me know!

if you like light novels, i raise you visual novels. they're my favorite way to consume japanese media—fully colored/rendered artwork, yet readable at your own pace, and usually fully voiced as well. a well-known example would be doki doki literature club, although that's a western product. be warned that a large number of vns do contain sexual content, but steam tends to censor those parts out (i would still recommend patching steam versions or buying the games elsewhere, like jast or mangagamer, just so you can have the full game). some staples include clannad, little busters, white album 2, subarashiki hibi, the umineko when they cry series, and steins;gate.

also, i do know she's been gaining a lot of popularity lately, but i also recommend listening to kasane teto. she's my favorite vocal synth. i'm biased towards her utau voicebank and her earlier songs, as well as utau covers of other vocaloid songs. and while you're at it, try paying more attention to the producers of the miku songs you listen to, as miku is just a voicebank, and you may find yourself liking the tuning or style of a particular producer.

i encourage you to use vndb.org and vocadb.net, for vns and vocaloid respectfully, to explore...

Oof, yeah, Seven Deadly Shits is not the best introduction to the medium :ahhha: But I'm glad you still kept hope and managed to turn your opinion around. Also I'm one to talk, I started with borderline hentai XDD

Damn, A LOT of things. I grew up in such a trad-frat-macho-posioned environment, that I learned to hate a lot of things and groups of people from a very young age. I didn't dare question them until way later, I was just happy to be validated for my hate. Thankfully, I had access to the internet, and all the knowledge that helped me see how harmful these views were. Unfortunately, I didn't act upon many of those until after school, because I was afraid of being the odd one out.

I'm currently going through the Steins;Gate VM at the moment, and god is it peak. I've also been listening to a little bit of Kasane Teto, since I've been getting Teto edits all over my TikTok fyp for months now. Although I don't like her songs as much as Miku's, it's mostly because of the nostalgia factor lol. By the way, are vndb and vocadb free?

teto has some old songs that might tickle your fancy if you're looking for nostalgia! teto territory and fukkireta come to mind. she's been around since 2008, ~8 months after miku! i would also recommend teto covers of classic miku/vocaloid songs; most of them surpass the originals in my opinion. there is an entire world of vocaloid to explore outside of miku; it encompasses so much that i can almost guarantee you'll come across songs not sung by miku that you've heard before. perhaps echo by crusher-p and copycat by circusp, both sung by gumi.

vndb (visual novel database) and vocadb (vocaloid database) are just database websites that keep records of all the visual novels and vocaloid content respectfully, so yes, 100% free to browse/create an account! also, anyone can add entries, submit ratings/reviews, make wishlists/favorite lists, etc. i think they're good ways to explore because you're not limited to certain platforms like steam for games or youtube for songs. for example, many vns are rejected by steam because some of the mods hate anime while the others are chill with it lol. additionally, many vocaloid songs aren't uploaded outside of niconico (basically japanese youtube) so they never really reach a wider global audience. the database websites catalogue all of these hidden gems.

i LOVE vocadb!! them + the vocaloid lyrics miraheze have gotten me through a lot because i don't speak japanese, chinese, or any of the other languages besides english that people make vocaloid songs in. SO handy

speaking of chinese vocaloid, i would recommend (to everyone here) luo tianyi as a good vocaloid to check out!! she is HUGE in china

Omg I love Vocaloid.

I never hated it, but when I was young I looked up Miku once and couldn't understand at all what she even was. Today, Vocaloid is all I listen to, all I think about, and making songs with Gumi is basically therapy.

If anything, Vocaloid makes other popular music less appealing to me. I see celebrities with their focus on good looks, fame, and lavish lifestyles and that just feels so distant and unrelatable, while I buy can Gumi's voicebank for not that much money and suddenly it's like my favorite singer/celebrity of all time is willing to collaborate with little, pathetic me.
