This is a pretty old thread idea I had, I wanted a place where I share my singing. I'd try to justify this by calling it an exposure exercise to public embarrassment, but it's purely for attention really. I love singing along to my favorite songs, and even though I don't have any vocal training or musical experience at all, I want someone to hear me and tell me good job, because I'm that desperate. Or honestly no, tell me I sound like shit if I do, tell me exactly what you think because I want to hear real feelings. Roasts are more than welcome 😁

I have shared some before on my page and in chat, and I will start with putting those recordings here as well. I also added the original songs' backing tracks in so it's not as unlistenable (I hope that's ok to do. I don't think anyone really cares, still). Though this is all just for fun, I did try my absolute hardest, this is my 100%, whatever that's worth. It does feel good to let out some of the raw emotions and frustrations this way, and I know I'm not the only one. Also it's another excuse for me to share and gush over the music I love :) Well, here goes nothing.

Dan Warren - Falling Down

EDIT: Spotify link

Summer eternally
Haunting and burning me up inside
Like some kind of fever
Waiting for nightfall
Frying like an egg on the sidewalk
But I can't quite seem to

Stay on my feet
The kids on the street
Pursuing the question
Parents retreating
They wanna know why
I'm always falling down

After the sun is set
Bourbon and cigarette mingling
And conversations
I feel no resistance
But I'm still no assistance with your tingling
Little sensations

Bent like a nail
Too bent to impale
You're rolling your eyes at me
Like I've failed you now
You wanna know why
I'm always falling down

Why do we always have to
Sit around and analyse it?
Why can't we just relax and
Be?

It isn't easy to think about
Anything other than old regrets
Much as I like to
The second I'm over it
I know that you will come around knowing that
You're gonna try to

Say you can help me
Like you can tell me
How to be happy
Wholesome and healthy
You don't even know why
I'm always falling down

Oh yeah, expect this thread to be 80% Dan Warren I guess XD Can you tell I'm obsessed with his music? Also yes this is the the status the status title drop!!! 👈😲 Love this song so much, and it's actually Summer now too, so there we go (though it's pretty chilly out rn, hope it lasts). I'm not entirely happy with how it came out, I think I could've done better with a few more takes, and yes I do many takes and then sit in Audacity for over an hour removing the much too jarring inhales and tweaking volume, as if anyone would care.

Also if you're wondering why use HIDEPOSTS, no reason really. I suppose for a tiny bit of extra privacy since non-members won't be able to see, but really I don't care.

The Beautiful People (120 Days) - Sedated Times

Out on the cold grey street
There's nothing left to do, oh
Get on a bus, get on a train, let's leave
I've spent too many days and nights
In this sedated town

Where breathing knocks you down
Nails you to the ground
Holds you down
And I'll go blind
I've lost my mind
(x2)
And I'll go blind
In this sedated town

Out on the cold grey street
There's nothing left to do
Don't let it get to me too
Cause I'll go blind
I've lost my mind
(x2)
In these sedated times

Get on a bus, get on a train, let's leave
I've seen too much let me go blind
From your sedative mind
Sedated times
I've seen too much let me go blind
I've lost my mind
In these sedated times

This was a challenging one, as screamy songs are significantly harder, and I even remember after 3 attempts my throat was absolutely demolished, and it isn't even that screamy of a song. I didn't do as poorly as I thought I would, at least I hope. Also I've been told it was good, but that could've been politeness. Don't be afraid to tell me if it sucks! Maybe even give genuine tips if you know a thing or two about singing. I don't think I'll ever want to do this as anything but a silly hobby, but I do want to see some improvement.

This is another track I reference plenty, and it has been my all-time favorite for a long time, maybe still is. 120 Days deserve more recognition, I say. I intend to attempt other songs of theirs as well, so... look forward to that?

Dan Warren - Satellite

EDIT: Spotify link

Back when we were both young and pretty
Oh, you had so much to say
But things weren't perfect in the city
So now you moved away
And my, my, look how your star has faded
You spend the night at home
Practicing your drums for a gig that never comes
And casting dirty glances at the phone

You've still got mountains in your mind
You've never even tried to climb
You never seem to find the time
You know you used to shine so bright
Was it all reflected light?
Were you just a satellite?

Lord knows these things get so confusing
When you have flown so far
Back homе the almond trees are blooming
But it's autumn where you are
And my, my, now all the leaves are changing
Just like the color of your hair
Time flies, soon everything looks strange and
A chill is in the air

You've still got mountains in your mind
You've never even tried to climb
You never seem to find the time
You know you used to shine so bright
Was it all reflected light?
Were you just a satellite?
(x2)

You know you used to shine so bright
Was that all reflected light?
Was nothing coming from inside?
Were you just a satellite?
You know you used to shine so bright
Was that all reflected light?
Was nothing coming from inside?
Were you just a satellite?

I actually don't hate this one. Not the song, the song is fantastic, I mean my rendition. Maybe it's because it's relatively easy on the throat, or maybe it's all the countless times I sang it back in college) My neighbors must've gotten very tired of hearing it (joking, I really hope no-one could hear me oh god I don't even want to think about it).

This song was also my first exposure to Dan, as I'm sure it was for many, as it was featured in Hypnospace Outlaw as part of Barnaby's Chair - a made up in-universe band, that I now know is greatly inspired by a band Dan was part of - Love Button. AND SPEAKING OF-

Love Button - Walk Me

EDIT: Spotify link

Would you hold me in the supermarket?
Would you scold me if I went on the carpet?
Would you talk me down from an unpleasant high?
Would you walk me in the park tonight?

I don't know where I lost my eyes
Are you there girl?
Have you noticed it's getting darker?
Out of nowhere I find the light
Is that you mom?
Would you walk me in the park tonight?

Would you help me button up my clothes?
Would you tell me when to blow my nose?
Would you teach me how to read and how to write?
Would you walk me in the park tonight?

I don't know where I lost my eyes
Are you there girl?
Have you noticed it's getting darker?
Out of nowhere I found the lights
Is that you mom?
Would you walk me in the park tonight?

A great segue, eh? Also I may have hit the limit of how many links can become embeds in a single post? I didn't even know that was a thing, maybe it's only on the preview. Huh. (EDIT: I turned 3 of them into pure links as a workaround. It seems the limit is 10 embeds, if anyone is curious)

I shared this one just recently in chat, and it's what inspired me to finally make this thread. Hope I won't regret it, haha... 😶

This song hit somewhere deep for me, not to say I relate necessarily, not entirely, but I've been slipping more and more into helplesness and infantility in the recent years. It's a harrowing song, and it provokes disturbing thoughts of the potential future if I keep living as I am. But not to doom any further, this is Offtopic, after all, the rendition turned out alright? I think. Really insightful commentary here, truly worth your time.

Alright seriously I've wasted enough of it already, and this is also all I have for now. If you actually took your time to listen to all or even any of it, thank you! ❤️ I hope it wasn't too bad/cringe/insert negative descriptor here. And I hope I provided any amount of entertainment and distraction from unhappy thoughts, and not the other way around. Expect more singing coming soon, or not, I am not known for keeping promises. Have a *hopefully* better day!

Not bad. I know nothing about singing, so can't give any pointers. And I haven't heard the originals, but it sounded pretty good to me. I like some of the lyrics. (oh yeah, the originals are in spoilers lol)

Love Button - Rest Stop

Oh let the bubbles wash over me
Let me slide down razor wire
While the spirit will set you free
But the spirit will set you on fire

Bubbles in the water sticking to my skin
Bubbles in the water sticking to my skin
And the light goes by
And the night goes by
And your life goes
Na na na na na na na na na

Way out in the middle of the ocean
There's a rope ladder up to the sun
Someday I'm gonna climb the umbilicus
To the land of super friends, super fun

They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to stop and have a little look around
They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to pause and pull this catheter out
They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to stop and wash my face
They should build a rest stop up in space

Hand over hand to the promised land
Gonna build a little house on the photosphere
Birds try to fly in the vacuum sky
But they never succeed, they never figure out why

They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to stop and have a little look around
They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to pause and pull this catheter out
They should build a rest stop here
I'd like to stop and wash my face
They should build a rest stop up in space

I wanted to maybe try re-recording it a few more times, but your post made me want to just post as is. Maybe I will retake it, because it's pretty rough. As I said screamy songs are VERY hard, you don't realize just how much before you try them. My throat couldn't handle more than two take at once. And I think my voice is just not suitable for these, or maybe I just don't know how to sing loudly. This is maximum volume for me, like I can't do screamier.

All this makes me wish I could rename the thread to "share your singing", so it's not just about me, and anyone can contribute. So from now on, if you want to post your singing here as well, please do! Or make your own thread, I like people expressing themselves in any way like this.

Wow, this was so fun. I loved listening. It brought tears. I love your voice. There's a vulnerability to it, a rawness and quiet strength. And you have excellent taste in music! I'm going to add them to my Spotify playlist. Satellite was my favorite. I like your version of Rest Stop better than the original. I listened three times. :)

I have a question and some suggestions for songs for you to sing.

Do you write your own music? If not, you could get a ukulele and start coming up with tunes.

Here are some random ideas for songs for you to sing. There are hundreds more I could name but I'll keep it a pretty short list. (Warning: I'm stuck in the past...)

Pink Bullets - The Shins
Dumb - Nirvana
Common People - Pulp
Mad World - Gary Jules version
Such Great Heights - Iron & Wine
Needle in the Hay - Elliott Smith
It's a Wonderful Life - Sparklehorse
Karma Police - Radiohead
Losing my Religion - REM
Whippin Piccadilly - Gomez
Driving Aloud - Robyn Hitchcock
Tempted - Squeeze
Cold Brains - Beck
Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney
Beetlebum - Blur
Add it Up - Violent Femmes
Conquistador - Procol Harum
Alone Again Or - Calexico version
Come Back in Time - Elton John
Tiny Dancer - Elton John

Keep up the singing!

Thank you so, so much! Honestly I didn't hope to reach someone this much, so I am very flattered ❤️

I don't write music, or have any musical training in playing or composing. The closest I got was messing around in FL Studio for a short while. I don't think I have it in me to ever make something original.

Also, thank you for these suggestions, I will keep them in mind! (no promises). Got a lot of classics there.

Omg! I'll totally listen to this later cuz its late but also theater music?! I must know!

Thank you! Are you asking if I'd sing theater music/musicals? I'm not very into it to be honest, though I also haven't heard that many. However, if you wish to sing your favorites, please do! I want more people to be less afraid to express themselves this way, without worrying if it's cringe to do so. It should never be seen that way!

I apologize for how long it took me to respond, I wanted to do something special this time, and I can only hope it was worth the wait:

Dan Warren - People As Projectiles

!!! VOLUME WARNING ON BANDCAMP: they have no volume slider, so adjust locally

Spotify link

A brand new album from Dan Warren, released just last month. Yes, I recorded myself singing the entire album. In the short time I've listened to it religiously, I just wanted to do it all together, felt right. Turns out it's not easy to sing multiple songs in a row, I was getting lightheaded and tingling in my limbs, and I took a few days to record and re-record it all. + I also learned quite a few tricks and basic effects in Audacity, so it was an extra useful experience (even if I will never use this knowledge in anything outside of this).

There is a lot I wanted to say about each song, but I am pretty tired from all the time I spent editing and just from the constant fatigue I'm feeling, though perhaps it's just excuses to avoid any additional effort. I guess most of what I have to say is feelings, as opposed to thoughts, so they're harder to put into words. Whatever, I may sometime return to this and write just how special every single song in this album is to me, and believe me they are.

It is especially tragic, since these songs were supposed to be featured in the sequel game to Hypnospace Outlaw - Dreamsettler, which was sadly discontinued 😥 It was one of the only future things I was looking forward to and gave me genuine desire to live... I am forever grateful, though, that this exists. Look at me not having much to say 😅 Alright, without any further ado:

1. Step Into The Light
Step into the light and all will be revealed to you
Step into the light and dreams will become real to you
We know where you've been, and we know where you're going
We can tell you that everything will work out fine

Step into the light and we will take your arms from you
And that will be all right, because we can keep all harm from you
We got movies on the screen, we've got apple juice and cookies
While you wait to see the other side

Didn't you know, didn't you know we were coming
In the still of the night, we've come to take your pain away
Please don't go, there is no cause to be so frightened
If you step into the light we will be kind to you
Help you build your ships and teach you magic
So you will never die

Step into the light and slowly it will come to you
That it was justified, everything life's done to you
In one moment you'll relive every painful instant of your life
Now understanding why

Didn't you know, didn't you know we were coming
In the still of the night, we've come to take your pain away
Please don't go, there is no cause to be so frightened
If you step into the light we will be kind to you
Help you build your ships and teach you magic
So you will never die
You will never die

First time I had to do a repeating echo effect, turned out pretty close. I put way too much effort into editing these, focusing on tiny details most people will never care about. That's a problem I've had forever, with art, with pretty much everything I'm passionate about.

2. Go
I can't quite be certain, but strongly suspect that I
Might levitate when I'm asleep from time to time
I know that's strange, and yet it seems
I never work, and so if those were dreams
Then I'm still dreaming
I am still dreaming

When the door was open, just for a moment
I had to hesitate, not knowing what this change would mean
If I become this other thing
This butterfly, first taking wing
I cannot understand
What I will understand

There is a moment I recall
On pins and needles in the hall
And somewhere your voice is calling "go"
"Come on, come on, GO"

Like a bone that's broken over and over again
I never quite fit together right
I don't know why
It's not my fault, it can't be helped
At least that's what I tell myself
And I believe me
I believe me

The final moment I recall
On hands and knees trying to crawl
And somewhere your voice is calling "go"
"Come on, come on, GO"
"Come on, come on, GO"

I still don't think I fully got how to make a believable chorus effect. I recorded that segment 4 times, then pitch shifted two of them, added reverb and echo, as well as tweaked volumes. In later tracks it sounds a bit better.

3. You'll Know
When the time has come for you, you'll know
While I wonder what to do, you'll know
When the air grows thin
And vacuum burns your skin
And slowly you begin to glow
Then you'll know
You'll know

There's a madness in your eyes, you know
That nothing ever satisfies, and so
In the end, defying
Your own fear of flying
And the terrifying odds,
You'll go
You know

Clearly you're meant for another age
One more deserving of you
Bent on transcending the everyday
Bound to become something new
Yeah that's you

Hey if it doesn't quite work out for you
At least you'll know beyond a doubt that you
Chose your own disaster
Despite their howls of laughter
And they'll name the crater after you
When you go
You know

Maybe the chorus sounds better because it's just "aaaaah". Regardless, I love this track. Do I even have to mention that? I love all of these tracks, it's honestly hard to pick a favorite.

4. Spitting Out The Blood
There it is again
That dead spot in the memory
Where something should have been
Forever now a mystery
Some hidden truth
Like missing tooth
The mind can't help explore
Even knowing I'm
Wasting time
I'm going back for more

How long has it been
Since the last time you were here with me?
And how should I pretend
When you were once so dear to me
And there's an empty space
Where once your face
Would occupy my mind
And knowing you
Have broken through
And left this world behind

But no matter where you are right now, I know you
You've never given up
You just keep getting up
Bruised and spitting out the blood
You've never given them a single inch
I bet they never saw you flinch, not even once

But what device of man
In all our insignificance
Could ever hope to stand
Against such grand indifference
And that insidious
Forgetfulness
You find when you leave home
You stop looking back
Start losing track
Of a world that you've outgrown

But no matter what you've turned into I know you
You've never given up
You just keep getting up
Bruised and spitting out the blood
You've never given them a moment's peace
Or in my mind at least that's how it's gone

As much as I'm trying to imitate Dan's performance 1 to 1, it is actually physically impossible for me to achieve the richness of his voice. I learned about it recently: the older we get, the more swollen and thus damaged our vocal cords get, as well as the muscles going through the process of wearing out, which are the reasons behind people, as they get older, getting that distinct voice that we associate with wisdom. It's really cool!

5. Most Of The Time I'm Fine
Most of the time I'm fine
Though I do have those days
Where it feels like something isn't right
And it just won't go away
It doesn't make much sense
But still there are those times
When that feeling's quite intense
Still, most of the time I'm fine

Most of the time I'm fine
Hey you know me
Most days I'm happy just to have some place to be
Yeah I know you're scared
Because you know I'm proud
You suspect there's things I might never say out loud

But hey most of the time I'm fine
I'm all right with myself
I mean, I've got reservations
Just like anybody else
And I do still get those days
When I feel like a machine
But at least lately I can say
That they've been few and far between

And most of the time I'm fine
Hey you know me
Most days I'm happy just to have some company
Yeah I know you're here for me
But you know I'm strong
Don't you think I'd tell you if there were something wrong?
No, most of the time I'm fine

If I did have to pick a favorite, it would be this or the next one. It brought me to tears that day, it was also the day I last went to the psychiatrist, pretty much confirming that she couldn't help me anymore, and that no one can, not unless I am willing to do something myself. Perfect timing... 😞

6. Pale Orange City Lights
When the stars came closer
We were all at first afraid
But when the night was over
We only wished that they had stayed
Have I grown transparent?
Can everybody see right through my skin?
Are all my bones apparent?
Does everybody know where I have been?

They've taken something from me
Left only vacuum in its place
A mouth that's always hungry
An absence nothing can replace
It's something that we owe each other
It's a fire that burns eternal, bright
It's a part of us that lives forever
Far from these pale orange city lights

Tell me you have not forgotten
Hey tell me everything will work out right
And promise me you'll be there waiting
Far from these pale orange city lights

What a harrowing song. I really hope I did it justice, Grim. I tried.

7. Comet
I can see you little comet
And I wonder, did you know
When life pulled you from your orbit
And you first began to glow,
Bright and aching like the dawn?
And did you know what was to come?
Oh, did you even know
What you were running from?

Do you remember when the sun first touched your face
Stripping flesh away, and just how strange it seemed
That it didn't hurt at all?
It felt like waking after sleeping in for days
To find your wings had dried and now you might
Escape

Well aren't you lovely, torn to pieces
And spilled across a moonlit sky
By the weight of expectations
Of a world that wants to see you shine
In a thousand pieces, bright and clear
A scar across a starlit dome?
Go, little comet, go
Anywhere but home
Go, little comet, go
Anywhere but home

I recorded these in two separate days, with multiple attempts per song. By this point I was quite exhausted, even after taking breaks. It really isn't easy on the voice, but I had a ton of fun doing it, and I'm still regularly singing these songs when I'm alone.

Hope you enjoyed this, as I said I put way too much time and effort into it. Don't think this will be a common thing, I'll likely not do a full album like this in quite some time. Also the next post will be something other than Dan, so look forward to that I guess. Thank you once again for all your kind words, they really help my self esteem, even if it's unhealthy to depend on others for that. I can't give it to myself, I need others to tell me I'm good... I'm rambling again, ok bye! ❤️❤️❤️

I don't know much about singing but I found this utterly fantastic! <3 You sound like an utter bundle of joy, which is not what I expect from a site like this but it's a pleasant surprise.
