Would anyone like to take a stab at why suicide rates are dramatically increasing?

No, rates are described as the percentage of the population not absolute numbers. Eg 10.4 persons per 100k.

I would say most suicide causes are deeply personal. - In my opinion.
But I guess it also really depends on where you live. Japan for example has the highest suicide rate.
Probably because they had a long tradition of "honourable suicide", but I think they also have a isolation problem. Since they have more rules on how to "show how you feel".

Also. Financial pressure is diffently getting worse. Everywhere. So that may be one of the causes.

Btw I found out that recently people started to blame the global warming for the increasing suicide rates.

"Projected temperature rises over the next 30 years could lead to an additional 21,000 suicides in the U.S. and Mexico, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Climate Change. Suicide rates have generally been higher in warmer months for centuries, but it's been difficult for researchers to draw direct comparisons to temperature, given the many other factors that vary seasonally (unemployment rates, daylight hours)."
From here:- https://www.popularmechanics.com/sc...peratures-could-lead-increased-suicide-rates/
And this is interesting too: https://www.theguardian.com/environ...emperatures-linked-to-increased-suicide-rates

The effects of warming is supposed to raise conflict and violence. Some hurting others and some hurt themselves. But even if that's true, it only means that the weather is "helping" it and not causing it. Btw, I just thought this may be interesting.

Man, idk why I wrote so much.

I would guess the gap between rich and poor is getting greater with more people ending up on the poorer side plus the demands of modern life are becoming increasingly more difficult for many people who simply cannot sustain a healthy mental balance with the stresses the world is pushing down upon people And generally speaking once you begin to lose out in the game of life it accelerates downwards making it harder to dig your way back out of a hole.

More and more people are realizing that the world sucks, that people suck, that their lives suck and will never ever get better, and that there is no point to go on surviving / existing when your going to die someday anyway.

Globalism, socialism, wealth inequality much greater these days, debt, divorce, losing financially and children in divorce or cps takes your kids, corrupt medical system, addiction, more poverty under socialism as other people's money runs out, lack of affordable housing, forcing high child support on men that can't pay, more single isolated people, families are more fractured due to poor parenting as a result of mom's outsourcing the raising of kids to daycare, public school, other pple basically care for your kid and so the kid doesn't bond with u as well in those first 5 years. Breakdown of family, moving good jobs out of the US, at least that majorly effected pple here. Whatever you tax u disincentivise, whatever u subside increases think all the poverty programs. Poverty increases when the gov steals money from the more motivated and competent and gives it to people who are not very motivated or competent lol! Taxing very hard working competent people at high rates disincentives them to produce as much.

Steven Pinker gives the most fundamental answer; subtle & hidden-in-plain-sight, why this place in particular, is invalid --a priori :

~1.5 centuries ago, Ludwig Boltzmann pulled a: "well, there's your problem" --explained via simple statistics... but that's none of my business, I'm just a brief visitor ;)

Well for starters the suicide rate is atleast double that becuase for evrey suicide atleast 2 are labeled accidental deaths.

Factors such as social isolation defintly contribute to the problem.

It's because as humanity progresses, they lose their "humanity" and become more and more of what they are just ought to create and not create them.

Can we leave the politics off this site please? It's offensive to see people blaming liberals and socialist principles etc for suicide especially since my health problems were caused by the American for profit health system and the only help I ever actually got was in a country with social democracy.

If you are blaming people who want equal rights, women's rights, human rights, and for everyone to have access to educaition and healthcare for the state of suicides I say you are not being reasonable nor fair.

I have wondered if the Internet has contributed to this with social media and also the ability to research method so you can get it right.

I started researching philosophy like antinatalism, found the works of Zapffe, Cioran, Schopenhauer and realized how inherently fucked up life is.
So the internet kinda opened my eyes, altho I was always pessimistic/nihilistic but not nearly as much as I am now.

I feel like we know too much nowdays, human brain is not supposed to consume so much information.

Saw this piece posted a few days ago on a Reddit sub; might hold some clues. My guess is that more and more people are choosing to abandon ship; they are the early foreseers of imminent disaster.

Honestly.. I think people are less emotionally equipped for life than in prior generations. I also think the loss of religion significantly changed people's ability to find meaning/purpose in life. Maybe the constant stream of information does it as well. Ignorance is bliss doesn't necessarily mean you're stupid.. maybe just that your world is smaller and more manageable.

Lol, predicted to increase by 2020, I wonder why? Seriously? I don't get why the rate would be increasing, rather than decreasing, since there's so many orgs and charities plugging the whole anti-suicide and anti-depression public service announcements. Sigh.

Maybe like me, more and more are getting personality disorders or modern life is altering their once 'normal' state of mind.

The world has gradually become a mess of unbearable proportions -- where everybody feels entitled to fabricate a personal (albeit false) truth and exploit other people just for the sake of feeling better.

It's normal to feel misplaced in this rampant chaos. Also, continuously witnessing how life is frail, precarious and wasted each and every second thanks to the information age, subconsciously planted in most people's mind the seed of futility. Few of them are able to deal with that. Religion has lost its appeal, and more people are questioning if it's enough to give interesting or sufficient answers. Either people are faithless or completely brainwashed by cultism and deranged beliefs that after some time get stale and redundant.

That's for emotional suicide. The percentages regarding rational suicide tend to be more or less the same regardless of the era, since they involve a meditation on the limitations of existence that are not fueled by pain, confusion or health problems.

The problem of having no comparative medium for consciousness is very troubling too, since humans have an existence bias viewed through an anthropomorphic lens. Consciousness isn't even exclusively human :
"According to neuroscientist Giulio Tononi, consciousness is "all we are and all we have: lose consciousness and, as far as you are concerned, your own self and the entire world dissolve into nothingness."

--it emerges from human brains. With the current evidence from physics and neuroscience pointing toward no freedom of the will, consciousness isn't even necessary. Galen Strawson has made the observation that "selves" last a small amount of time and are not human (in the sense of the bodily organism), but are pure phenomenological constructs. If all the conclusions from these empirical observations are true: then the temporal human experience is akin to a self-aware snowball rolling down a hill (at birth) and then breaking apart and ceasing to be, at the bottom of the hill (at death). No control, just pointless self-conscious fallout... another analogy might be something like a self-aware cloud...

People just can't keep up in such an ultra-competitive world. You have to do way too much just to live somewhat comfortably. It's ridiculous. Suicide is quite rational considering the economic gap and its future trend. Of course everyone wants a better life, but it's almost impossible to achieve.
