Can anyone tell me if what I did counts as a meltdown or something else?
I'd been irritated by a thing my brother did to me and it didn't have a satisfying conclusion. I was watching football with my dad and I was angry at the end of a game, but I wouldn't get that angry over a game usually. My brother said something and I was chastised by my dad. I started self harming and tried a new method too. I couldn't control my voice or my emotions. I felt out of control and hurt. Crying and carrying on. I just don't know what to call this, but it's happened before and I don't like it.

The cutting itself is not an illness, it is just something which comes as a result of other various problems : anxiety, panic, bipolar disorder, depression, borderline disorder. Don't blame yourself, as it is always hard to control your emotions and actions.

Doesn't sound like a meltdown, but certainly you got upset. Maybe you were wound up with other things which made you react to the football game.

My wife recently had a full-blown road race episode. I pulled a door off its hinges at work last year after an annoying meeting. Snapping now and then is pretty common, much more so if you're dealing with some tough issues.

Were there any consequences for this?

What did your brother say to u? There had to have been a trigger. I've had this happen b4. You should read up about emotional flashbacks. It sounds like u have had some trauma since most people these days have at least 3 adverse childhood events before age 18.

I've never done something like it at work before so I think it was seen as an anomaly. I clearly was angry during the meeting -- and voiced my objections to a very dumb policy. Pulling the door off its hinges looked like I was leaving the room very frustrated, but didn't intend to do any actual damage.

I had a sit-down with my boss's boss a few days later. Basically, he clearly supported my reasons for being angry about what transpired at the meeting, but he make it clear there would be consequences if I did something like that again. To make matters worse, the media was there and it was mentioned in the news.

It has been nearly a year since it happened and I still worry about it every day. Nevertheless, I received a nice raise a couple months ago and have been encouraged by my boss to put my name in for a new administration position that recently opened up (they don't know how depressed I am).

That's good news.

Though I know how great it feels, I always get worried whenever I read something like this. Self harm can quickly evolve into an addiction if you don't quickly find another coping method, and you can turns things around before your body is covered in scars like mine.

Oh, my brother bit my back and left a wound. Couldn't move my shoulder for a couple of days and I had tenderness for about a month.
