Do you ever feel so alienated from the world that you're not even human? Have you ever written an "origin story" for yourself?
One, actually quite realistic origin story is that I developed my condition after a toxic exposure. My mom was a hoarder and my basement was chock full of antique treasures...including a box of flaking, possibly lead-based, paint and an absolutely gorgeous glowing radium watch. I'm literally radioactive
.
Something far more fantastical is something called Hachi Sakusama. I'm not sure about the spelling but it means 8 feet tall in Japanese. Basically the legend goes that there is an 8 foot tall woman in Japan that preys on children. Once she sets sights on them, she will pursue them, making a "po po po" sound, until she catches them. They are never seen again. What exactly happens to the children afterwards isn't clear. But I sometimes wonder if I was kidnapped by this entity and replaced with a changeling. When I was a kid, I was CONVINCED I was really Asian and that I had been kidnapped, so...
In keeping with the theme of Japanese urban legends is the encounter with the kune kune. It's a wriggling, faceless apparition that appears in fields on hot days. When viewed from a distance, it's safe but if you approach it or look directly at it, it will cause permanent insanity. I have always played in fields as a kid and approached everything without fear.
Now I have an evil maniacal laugh. I'm just saying.
Obviously this is just for fun. What can you come up with?
