Was cleaning my bathroom earlier with hydrochloric acid for the tile stains and grout and while scrubbing, I saw a half-liter bottle of bleach, which is almost empty , down behind the toilet. It made me think of H2S but I only have these two and for a 2sqm bathroom, I dont think its enough to produce chlorine gas nor I am well versed in its ppm. So I continued scrubbing away, closed the vent, then poured a puddle of hydrochloric acid on the floor (about 300-500ml) and sprayed the rest of the bleach on the puddle. I waited for a few minutes watching the reaction form bits of fog hanging in the air. This time, I already felt slight tingling in my throat, coughing for a few times but I was not satisfied that it didnt thicken or fill the entire room. Out of sheer curiousity, I wondered if I could somehow compress, contain, or condense the gas to a height low enough so it wont escape to the ceiling or seeping out of the vent and I can simply crouch or lie down breathing the concentrated gas. So I turned the shower to the coldest setting and set it to mist to fill the room with cold temperature in hopes of making the gas dense enough to concentrate (although the HCl and NaClO puddle is not directly in contact with the mist as the shower has a "divider" to prevent the rest of the floor from getting wet)
By this time, I am already coughing frequently and can smell a sharp-piercing smell like Im inhaling small razor blades. Not wanting to waste water or pass on dirty (yep, gotta look pretty even in death *wink), I took a shower and for a moment while I was in the middle of it, I felt like I was about to faint as the smell was getting stronger. I was assuming that since the room got colder, the gas has become dense and concentrated. Then, my ears started buzzing, vision started closing in, and I can hear my heart beat loudly so I hurried up my routine (dont want to be caught dead butt naked
) to put a towel on but as I was about to finish, it seems the smell either was gone or it has become bearable. My head hurts a bit, my throat is still itchy, and my lungs hurt as I breathe but I am able to breathe normal again. I was confused. So I finished my routine and checked the vent, door, or window if any was open for it to escape but none was. I can only assume that it either seeped through the small openings or maybe I got used to the smell. Still, the experience of breathing pain is no joke. Feels like I was back in my teens smoking packs for days. Seems like I need loads of those chemicals for it to be effective.
Edit: After further research, it seems chlorine gas mixing with water turns it to Hydrochloric and hypochlorous acid (though confusing as the chlorine gas was the reaction from hydrochloric acid and bleach) If so, apparently I turned it back to Hydrochloric acid. No wonder it feels like I just got out of the pool.
Note: dont mix chlorine gas with water.
Well, was worth a try feeding curiousity. Now I'll have to rest these lungs for a few days.
