Not gonna share it here for obvious reasons (can't have the feds throwing me away in a looney bin) but I don't like my full government name very much and would like to change it for a variety of reasons such as:
  • It's an extremely generic name for people of my ethnicity and far too many people have it
  • I don't like when people take one look at it and immediately assume I don't speak English (or worse, that I'm an international student like do you not hear my thick Aussie accent goddamn)
  • I don't want to be associated with my family and more specifically, my parents whatsoever
  • I want more job opportunities in the future and feel like that would be achieved with a more Western European sounding name
  • Don't want to be tracked by certain family members when I cut then off fully
  • It's ugly
  • I already go by a different name to people anyway
I was thinking of changing it whilst still young so it's not a massive hassle for my future self

I was a monk when I was younger and took a different name. I don't use it anymore, but when I look back I think of myself by that name. It's almost like the name of that chapter of my life.

I think there's a lot of benefit to changing your name. I know many who have changed there names for various reasons. Any reason's valid to do so imo.

hell yeah. i'm personally going to change my name because i hate it and feel sick at the thought of having it on my grave someday. as the person above me said, any reason is a valid reason to change your name. if you don't like the one you were given, it's okay to pick a new one. it's like getting a shitty gift and bringing it back to the store for a return/exchange.

I've already formally changed my name from the name that I was born with for.. obvious reasons if you know me.

I would love to legally change it, but I'm not sure about cost.

I have changed my name a few times to suit my whims. It depends on what state I live in how easy or difficult it is, I would do it every two years if it was easier.

I changed mine slightly to remove my middle name, which was named for my abusive father. From memory, the cost was about $70. There is a rule that you can only change it 3 times in a lifetime. At least that's the case for Victoria.
$70 is the total cost? I always thought it was way more expensive. Can you share how you begin the process? What court does it and do you have to see a judge and explain why?

Yes. I have a very unique name and I'm probably the only person in the US with that specific combo. Every time anyone might google me they will see a crime I commited 😂 it's embarrassing. I feel like I'll never live it down because I can't remove it off the search results. It wasn't a violent crime or theft or anything serious. But it's still cruel to publicly humiliate people by posting news article on the internet. Anytime someone searches my name I think it will keep it fresh in the search results.😔My name is a foreign name also which is frustrating to deal with b/c it's unusual in spelling and the name itself. I swear they cursed my future with giving me that name.

It was not difficult or expensive here. Just a bit of paperwork and a small fee. I would check with your local authorities.

I've gone through so many pseudonyms, but don't think I could ever decide on what to legally change it to.

My given name is mediocre and not fitting for me at all.

How did you become a monk? I'm looking into becoming a nun. Were you a Buddhist one?

I was a Hindu monk, but have also spent time in formal Zen study too (although never ordained).

How did I become a monk? It was a gradual process. Gradually visiting the temple more, lots of studying, and then made the jump. It actually came shortly after my first CBT attempt.

It's a bit challenging to change your legal name, but It's possible if you give them a good reason.

For me I'll just use pseudonyms if I'm online, and won't post anything if the acc has my actual legal name. It's crazy how much information you can find out about someone with just their legal name alone. Sure there's breaches of information leaked on the dark web, but even in the clear web it only takes a name to ruin someones life honestly.

Same! I never use my full name for anything. All my social media and accounts only have my first name and a fake name as the last name when required, lol. I hate my surname, I was actually thinking of changing it but I don't want to have to spend money, I'm broke 😭 I hate using my full name for anything

That's smart.

For me I don't hate or love my legal name, it's straight up mid. I'm just doing it for privacy reasons. I've been learning more about opsec, hacking, social engineering, etc, and with all the AI tools available you can get really creative with exploiting people. I was tempted to go for it myself bc I realized I'd be able to do it so much better than others, but I already know so much about legal businesses I'd rather not take that risk and I'd also feel like shit if I stole money from innocent people. But yeah, anyways people really have no idea. https://www.truepeoplesearch.com/ can get you all the information you need about someone. You got their full name? You're in. Now you got their home address, previous home addresses, their email, their phone number, their neighbors information, their entire blood families information. Shit even without all that information you could easily run an extortion / black mail scam on anyone who puts their personal life on instagram and ruin their reputation. I tracked the bitcoin address from a scammer and he's made absolute bank from that shit. I've got a whole list of scams I could name out and many methods, not so I can do em but so it won't happen to me. Best way to avoid it is to simply stay anonymous online, not put out your legal name anywhere, and opt out of the 20+ websites that are all data brokers who compile personal information. Stay anon.

Yeah, I do it for privacy reasons as well. I'm paranoid about my privacy, there are like no photos of me on the internet, and I never post any photos of myself. I opted out of and removed my info from (I think all of?) those websites (how tf did they even get it in the first place?) and I hate the fact that everyone's data is being sold. I hate the fact that people's private information is freely available on the internet, and being sold on the dark web. I hate data brokers. It's literally my personal information.

Yes! Absolutely! This is one of the issues I have with being born into a family: we do not get to choose our names - they are chosen for us by our family. Firstly I would like to partly change my forename because it is too long, and I dislike the way it sounds; also I really like the shorter version of the name. Then I would also like to remove my middle name. Lastly I would change my surname too; I do not dislike my surname (unlike my forename) I just simply do not want to have it, because it is inherited from my family - like most people, and I would prefer to have a surname of my own choosing rather than it coming from "blood".

Alternatively: if it was more accepted, and there was a low chance of it being mocked, I would like to have a descriptive name, or a designation of some kind.

I wanted to as a kid because I'm male but was always told it's a female name, now it's just what it is. I became Jewish as a young adult and took a Jewish name that appears in any religious ceremonies or that would be on my grave and such, but my legal birth name is still what appears on my documents and what the general public calls me.
