The article says:
"she was sent to a psychiatric hospital against her will"
If they have decided to put you into a psych unit then the "smart" option is to go in willingly. Once they have made the decision you are going in, then you are going in - its academic as to whether you agree or not. If you go in willing you are likely to get out sooner.
In my country, if you are unwillingly then:
- your stay is longer;
- they won't let you out during the day;
- you have to attend certain amount of therapy classes;
- the law allows them to recall you after you have been released (a bit like having your parole/warrant recalled).
You also have to be careful what you say. One guy I met on the inside told me what happened to him. He said to them "I don't want to go to the assessment unit...", and before he could finish his sentence they invoked the law. However, his full sentence was going to be "I don't want to go to the assessment unit first, I want to go straight to the main hospital", i.e. he was willing, but wanted the skip the assessment phase, which had been through many times before.
