Sometimes I play with the idea of calling the crisis helpline after ingesting SN. Not to have someone call for help, but to not be alone. However, there are some problems with that. For one thing, you're putting a huge burden on these people. Also, the person may just hang up on you or be rude, which of course you don't want to happen in your last moments. Then there's the problem with the police/the risk of rescue and survival. This may be handled differently in each country.

I found a paper from our national crisis hotline and it says that they're only authorized to have the number traced by the police when it's already critical, for example the suicidal person has taken a lethal dose of XY or injured themselves seriously. Merely announcing suicide isn't a reason to involve the police according to this paper. Since it will probably take a while for the police to get involved (if at all), and by then it will be too late anyway, I've been thinking about making a call to these people. Also, I think one doesn't have to say in advance that they're ingested a deadly amount of XY or are going to die... One could drag it out until it's too late to intervene.

What do you think about this? Would you do it?

No, I wouldn't.
I've called a suicide hotline before and the service was ridiculous. I would hate to have a conversation like that again.

I wouldn't because for me death is very personal and I wouldn't want to traumatize someone. But I understand those who would do it. Recently I had a very bad experience and I couldn't sleep alone in my room.

Although at the time I was looking for a partner so as not to die alone, I think the best thing for me is to do it without company of any kind (like a large part of my life). Also, with how paranoid I can get sometimes, I would already think that they would send me an ambulance or the police somehow after calling.

Few years back Samaritans volunteer offered to stay on the line with me so I didn't die alone. Back then they had the strict protocol never to summon help if someone disclosed. And they didn't . I thought that was an incredibly humane act. I was found unconscious by insomniac passer by.

But wouldn't do it again as not everyone wants to hold that responsibility and many both not allowed to and time limit on calls ( in UK).

Plus can you imagine getting some awful person acting out their own shit and hearing their words in your last moments.

Here we have crisis lines run by every single MH NHS health body. It's where those staff with the least skills and worst reps get moved sideways to. Famous last words to suicidal people who have rung for help include the infamous lines ' you have capacity therefore it is up to you to take responsibility ' followed by slamming the phone down. These phrases appearing again and again in coroner's courts across the country.

Which is how ppl from the UK have ended up here....

I want to be watching or listening to something warm, that will hug me, that will not feel threatening or triggering. And be watching the stars ......

The way tech is nowadays they probably have ways to trace your calls like the other emergency lines do. So there's no way I'd risk it.

Honestly, they just want you to get off the phone.
I've had a few calls with them over the years and they've all been terribly isolating.
What you don't want, in your last moments, is to be talking to someone playing with a rubber band ball on their desk, glancing up at the office clock and wondering if 11am is too early to eat their sandwich.

From a pay phone.... but I think they are traced now also.

Not unless I wanted to be carted off to the hospital. Regardless of the quality of the conversation all of the hotline where I live will call an ambulance on principle.

From a FORMER volunteer crisis center suicide hotline counselor.
Do Not Call if you are planning to CTB. Be very careful of the words you use. I was trained for over 1000 hours and was on the phones for over 6 yrs. We were trained to listen for certain words or phrases like....I just want to go to sleep so this will stop, or I can't do this anymore. Then we had to move to a "suicide assessment" If the counselor thought you were at a high risk of trying to kill yourself, we were told never to hesitate to call the police, have the call traced, have the police ping cell towers, anything, just keep the person on the phone.

There should be a CTB hotline that one could call if they don't want to be alone.
In another life maybe there will be.

If you call the Samaritans, switch off your Bluetooth and location feature on your phone and then go to call forwarding and switch on Hide your number! Then you can call them without identifying yourself or your phone!

only if you would find it comforting to hear "i hear you saying you're feeling suicidal. that must be very difficult. have you tried taking a hot bath?"
or if you'd like medical/police intervention, of course.

Several weeks ago, I asked a person on the crisis line if they could basically talk to people who are about to off themselves or are dying. I was told that they don't have to accept that request (understandably), but otherwise can't do anything about it.

Strangely enough, I also got another person on the line once who told me that they could call a special number in situations like these. What the number was about, she could not tell me, because it was not yet necessary to call there.

So it doesn't just depend on the country, but also which person you're talking to, I guess. Since I have also talked to a few non-empathic people on the crisis line by now and it is basically hard to reach someone and it could be traumatic for the other side, not to mention the risk of survival, I think I would not do it.

Personally no. I'm of the opinion that calling a crisis line in those circumstances means the person calling wants to be saved in a way.

It became a situation that I couldn't sustain after a while. Because I had to toe the party line (re answering the phones and getting help) and half the time I wanted to say, I get it, I'll be here.
So I left the crisis center.
But if there were a way for people who wanted someone to be there with them in some way at the end, like on the phone, I'd be on that list of people to call as I'm sure so many others on this site would.

This is just my personal opinion, and I understand that everyone has their own views. This is mine.

I've called them while I had a blade pointed to my arm. They ended up sending the crisis unit and we just talked for a solid two hours. Felt better after but it made me realize that if I really wanted to die then I wouldn't have called anyone and had just done it
