Would you avoid a gathering or go because your parents want you to?

Is it okay to avoid a gathering because you don't want feel horrible for being jealous of how others are doing even when your parents tell you things like you shouldn't bother about these and guilt trip you for not going.

Personally, I wouldn't go. My life, my rules if I want to avoid something.
