"The Swiss Medical Association has released new guidelines for Swiss doctors which will make it more difficult for foreigners to obtain a VAD in Switzerland.

In a series of moves aimed at 'medicalising' a non-medical Criminal Code which allows anyone to help anyone else to die (as long as one's motives are altruistic), the Swiss Medical Association has placed new obligations on Swiss doctors.

These restrictions include:
2 interviews with prospective VAD applicants, 2 weeks apart
No more VAD for 'healthy' people, regardless of age
Confirmation of Capacity & Autonomous wishes by independent 3rd party

How these new guidelines will be adhered to by the Swiss assisted suicide groups remains to be seen.

But given that all of the Swiss VAD groups use the drug Nembutal and given only doctors can prescribe Nembutal, it is difficult to imagine an alternate reality ... unless the non-drug option of Sarco can be introduced.

Sarco requires no drugs and, therefore no doctors. Watch this space.

I can understand why they would need to have some controls over this. We need to see how this evolves.

Ah yes, because previously it was TOO EASY for 'healthy' people to get help exiting this world. It seems we are very far from some middle-ground between what I'd actually like to see implemented and what is realistically possible in a human society akin to ours. Here's hoping we'll actually get euthanasia access before utter climate catastrophe, eh?

I wonder if this has to do with those two sisters that traveled for euthanasia.

Could be. The brother was a real pain in the ass for someone who didn't have contact with his sisters for 30 yrs.

Is there more news about this? Has any vad clinic shared how this effects their policies?

Anyone knows more about it?

Oh dear. This does not look good. And who gets to define "healthy"?

Off topic for the thread, but @1TorturtedByLife I am happy to see you here!

MAJOR EDIT!!

I found out from an individual who has the "green light" from Pegasos that it does not apply to Pegasos. They are independent of the groups who have made the decision.

I don't know how to edit or delete the original post.

Neither Exit Int'l nor any publications have bothered to mention this incredibly important exclusion.

My source is EXTREMELY reliable. I trust him 100%.

Pegasos has allways been different and is the only association that approves VAD even for healthy people. For me Pegasos is the best choice.

Thanks for sharing! I dont quite understand this still. Can the clinics themselves decide if they follow the new guidelines or not? But the doctors may face problems who prescribe N in the clinics? I wonder why these articles dont underline the point where SAMS wrote about the 3th party requirement?

This makes me wonder if the same will apply to VAD in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany.

It's totally unrelated. The Benelux countries only assist their own citizens, and Germany is nothing like the others. Also, nothing is changing for Pegasos, which uses the right-to-die model rather than the medical model the other Swiss organizations use.

I have no idea how much weight those new guidelines carry. Only thing I gathered is that the vad clinics make their own decisions about it. Maybe doctors can face trouble if prescribing N outside the guidelines but willing to take that risk. Who knows..
