Just why??? The small European nation I am from is almost completely atheist, yet there's no assisted suicide. Not even for the terminally ill.
I am glad that countries like Canada, Switzerland and Netherlands are pushing the way forward.

Because they want to control others. And also keep everyone in the prison

I don't know. It's a shame.

Animals are treated better than we treat other humans when they're terminally ill / want to exit for personal reasons.

Some countries are tied tight by religion and social norms. Some don't even have the death penalty for extreme crimes let alone assisted suicide. In those places no one would want someone's death on their hands, whatever the reason might be.

The most honest answer. It's difficult to make that choice for a lot of people. Letting someone die or even helping someone die is difficult for the majority of rational compassionate people. It's much easier just to look the other way as you won't feel as personally responsible. The issue is a large number of people do that all at once and you end up with the current state of things.

Unless more people start dealing with ending the suffering of people who are terminally ill the current state of things will continue on forever.

Because it's extremely difficult to know when someone has explored all options for recovery.

Also, if it was too available, the rich and powerful would use it as a way to encourage poor and disabled people to CTB.

Given that the rich and powerful control the government, I wouldn't expect this to be the real motivation for laws against assisted suicide. If the rich and powerful wants something, they always get it.

to be fair, even those with assisted suicide usually have very strict criteria for it

to be fair, even those with assisted suicide usually have very strict criteria for it
Especially for mental illnesses, depression, etc!
They are trying to say that you do not have discernment, and that you are incapable of thinking about your own death, and are imposing life on you!
In countries where we have the right to have assisted suicide or euthanasia, for psychological reasons, they also try to impose on you several psychiatric expertises, times to wait, several requests, several psychiatrists who say yes, etc!

And when assisted suicide or euthanasia is authorized, there are always pro-life idiots (those torturers, often not sick, handsome, tall, rich, etc., who love to see others suffer, their inferior being), to try to change the laws, pursue everyone in justice, demonstrate, yell, threaten the patient, call him a coward, an idiot, etc...!!! It's the same thing when you are considered too young, even with a serious physical illness, with very serious handicaps, a hellish life, unbearable pain!! Long live shitty paternalism!! Sorry for the rudeness, but I can't take any more of my own life, my pain, my loss of autonomy!

Pro-lifers often try to pass themselves off as heroes, perfect, gods, vigilantes, etc., for their egocentrism, narcissism! It is rare to see pro-lifers act because they are simply afraid of losing loved ones, of seeing hell, etc., it is rather often out of pure narcissism, fanaticism and also for the lobbies of big pharma, sales materials, medicines, seeing sheep working, paying taxes, consuming, etc.

And even, when one has a physical illness, in many countries, one must be in a terminal phase, almost on the verge of death, with cancer everywhere, a body that is falling apart, like a vegetable, skin and bones, ... almost a skeletal zombie, like on Halloween, to HOPE of having an authorization to be able to die "in peace"!! Thank you pro-lifers, thank you backwards, backward-looking, conservatives, religious fanatics, extremists, etc.

When will there be a right to die, at one's request, where one wants, in the way one wants, for any reason, for the simple fact that one did not ask to be born, quite simply? ! Even pro-lifers know they never asked to be born themselves!
