  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

The percentage of people who commit suicide is extremely low. Does the average person not feel suicidal? Are people really that optimistic?

I'm so different from everyone, I'm so weird. Even on this site I do not feel comfortable because English is not my native language, and I am afraid I will sound stupid.

I think it is because taking our own lives is hard. Many people have suicidal thoughts but they do not go through with it. There is the overcoming of the survival instinct and many people are scared of failed attempts. I think you have to be desperate to commit suicide, in a lot of cases. Many people have problems but they haven't reached that level of wanting to end their life.

I also think some people haven't had much bad luck, they have a lack of physical/mental problems, so they are able to cope with life. I struggle to believe those types of people exist as I cannot comprehend it myself but I have family members who fit into that category. And also as humans we are programmed to survive, when we have problems we try everything to find solutions and work through them. Suicide is a last resort for many people.

Well, I don't really feel my survival instinct that much. I wasn't sad or anxious when I bought a rope, or wrote a suicide note.
Even if I will feel much better, I can have a great day - but at the end of the day, I won't be too scared to CTB.

I think its maybe more to do with the fact hey hide what is going on. I can only ever see news articles if you look for them on the Internet. It requires some research before you can find something. They seem be afraid to say the word suicide or describe it as a suicide every time. They described it as not suspicious circumstances or no one else is being sort in connection. This happens in the uk so may be different but some of the things Ive come across I would say it may be happening in other country's too.

It is possible suicide rates are higher then they are making it out to be.

One million people are killing themselves every year on this planet. The most common cause of death in many parts of the world in the age of 15 years to 44 years is suicide. When we live long enough - and life expectancy is very high in the time we now live in - people will get sick and disabled and then people want to commit suicide to avoid years of meaningless suffering.

1 million out of almost 8 billion!
edit: it's actually less than one million.

I'm pretty sure most people are quite unhappy, but they don't have the courage to get down to business.

it takes courage. not everyone has it. most of us are too scared; too scared of whatever comes (or doesn't come) after, too scared of failing, too scared of regretting it last second when it's too late, too scared of the finality of death. too scared.

that and the fact that survival instinct is a thing.

I think it's because most people are programmed to live and ignore this nonsense universe and life itself. They just don't realize that existence is ridiculous!

Religion and the fear of death itself. Death in general is a very taboo subject.

Its simple. Most people either haven't suffered enough trauma on their lives or they are not conditioned enough to death to actually carry it out in a serious manner. It also "helps" to have nobody you are close to. Humans are social creatures by nature and protecting members of their tribe is a powerful deterent indeed.

I also believe a lot of suicides don't always get reported as such. Some people kill themselves via a car accident, or other ways that don't appear as a suicide. I had a friend that killed himself with a purposeful car accident. It was reported as an accident of course, but we all knew the truth.

You have to be in a breaking point in order to seriously consider suicide. And even from people seriously considering it, small percentage actually does it. Yeah life is hard more or less for everybody, but taking your life is unimaginable (naturally) for most people.

at least 1,5 death of 100 deaths are suicide. So in this no suicide is not an uncommon phenomen. i am living in a small village in Switzerland. in the last 12 years ca 6 people have suicide. So you say its rare? I see it different.

With current rules, restrictions, and attitudes, to ctb is a fearsome act, suicide is necessarily painful and/or scary.

I think it's more common than the available statistics make it out to be. A large number of people want their ctb to look like an accident after all and I'd imagine at least a few of them were successful.

But what I'm curious about if thoughts of CTB are so common is why do we make it so difficult for others to leave? Yes there's a lot of fear, of pain, of getting caught, of failing, but all of that fear, at least, wouldn't be necessary if we just worked together to arrange for people to leave peacefully whenever we wanted. I just can't believe that so many people want to die but we refuse to understand those who feel the same as us? Considering humanity has worked together to try to solve many problems it's faced over our history, it just seems to make no sense to me at all that they would not do the same here. I honestly think that suicide is as rare as it is, oddly enough, just because people in general don't want to CTB. They fear death too much to ever want to give it to themselves, or let others do it to themselves. I honestly don't think these people ever want to die, and their perspectives are so alien compared to ours that they can never consider our desires long enough to humor them.

I wonder all the time the real number of suicidal people. We know most attempts end in failure. Not to mention even making an attempt is hard to do. If people had the option to die in their sleep peacefully, how many would take the offer?

I have noticed that many, maybe even most people, seem to believe that something amazing is waiting just around the corner for them. And it will all be worth it. But life doesn't work like that. Often times the long hoped for miracle doesn't happen. And life just keeps dealing us bad hands.

Man I relate to this so much. I've been waiting for change of luck for 10 years now. I tried hard to turn things around but it just wasn't in the cards for me. At some point you have to be honest with yourself. Life is not a hollywood movie. There are no happy endings.
