  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is just so fucking cruel😡!

Since the UK has socialized medicine, I'm guessing it's not because of all the money healthcare practitioners and pharmaceutical companies would lose (like in the US). It would actually save the government heaps of money.

Is it because of the religious right? (another huge thing in the US, but I know the UK isn't nearly as full of religious zealots)

It's because they want as many slaves working into old age as much as possible. They keep bumping up the retirement age because they say people are living longer. Yeah, living longer to bust their humps for privileged right winged toffs. The conservatives in Britain also hate. hate. hate, poor and disabled people. Their cruel attacks have put the most vulnerable people in society in desperate situations. Check out what the former Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn said to Boris Johnson as he was forced to resign: This short clip will give you greater insight into the Tory mindset.

It's much more like the US than I thought. The "conservatives" around the world are just a bunch of greedy, self-serving psychopaths!

Thank you for your response. I've read and seen a lot about Johnson, and he is absolutely despicable while being quite daft. Kind of like Trump🤢.

I don't think it's to keep us working or to genuinely desire to keep us alive. The truth is that whether a politician believes it's the right thing to offer or not, it would be political suicide for them to back it. The general population does not understand and it's too controversial of a topic for them.

There are too many people that believe suicidal thoughts and desires can be cured. And to an extent I do believe that some people have less coping mechanisms than others, and with the right support people can get back on the right track which is something that should absolutely be focused on. But there are some of us who can't be saved, where the cards we're dealt with means that we're not simply fucked in the head, but that our lives are so fucked that we're backed into a corner - and for anyone not in this situation, it's impossible to understand.

Suicidal thoughts are one thing, but terminal illnesses or living indefinitely in agony are a whole different thing. It's awful that so many people around the world can't see the difference. But, globally, religion dictates so much of what people think.
Maybe because the UK has always been very conservative.
So true. Nothing more conservative than a monarchy.

Agreed, that's partially what I meant by being cornered by the cards you're dealt with. It's similar to what I'm personally going through.

The reality is that selfishness is the reason we do not have this. Whether it is being closed minded from religious beliefs or for political gain, either way in the eyes of those who have an objective this isn't their priority. It's the horrible world we live in.

It may.well.change. The.Bill.to legalise it.is.in progress. Of course, who.can.apply remains.to be advised. The NHS is almost paralysed due to poor resourcing and staff shortages. People are dying needlessly in their tens of thousands. So.why would sanctity of life be relevant if someone in dire pain wanted to end their own suffering.!?

The official excuse is to "protect vunerable people" but anyone with half a brain cell could realize how much of a cop out excuse that statement is when examining the track record of current politicians and their behaviour in parliament.

Every year, wages become less due to inflation, benefits are cut for the unemployed and disabled, sick and invisibly disabled people whose condition does not improve get the finger wagged and pointed at them for "wasting precious NHS resources", the old and frail deteriorate rapidly because there aren't enough people to care for them..

Combine this with a very individualistic, every man for himself culture, and it becomes obvious that none of this is about safeguarding the vunerable. No one gives a shit about us "vunerable people", rather they possess some deeply held moral dogma about sanctity of life that leaves them feeling uncomfortable with the topic of euthanasia.

This is why we have terminal cancer patients starving or young people with brainstem decay rotting away on life support whilst clinically dead. As long as someone is breathing, their state would be quantified as living in the minds of many. Many do not think about what that sort of hollow existence actually entails.

They cannot fathom a life without dreams, with no love, no health, no physical ability, no income, no stability, etc because if their quality of life was as bad as that of the average person seeking euthanasia, they wouldn't be able to sit in parliament and debate for hours. Considering the prevalence of Catholicism in the upper echelons, it will be very hard to change minds as even more secular sects of religion still champion "sanctity of life"

Just like the US, it's because suicide would be destruction of government property.
