Why is joy brief and pain/suffering lasting?

Despite successes in life, they are brief and don't last that long. Pain on the other hand lasts for much longer and it kinda sticks with you sometimes.

So despite all the good that happens to us, the bad affects us more. What's the point of living irrespective to how much 'good' enters our lives.

Is suicide the best option to go with even if we get a 'life-changing good' (like a promotion, job we always wanted, partner, etc…) affecting our lives?

^I'm tending to saying to yes to that.

It really sucks that whenever people get to experience those life changing good things, it's always just a matter of time before the relationships or things they have are lost or taken from them. Usually when people experience those kinds of losses, it's because of circumstances outside of their control.

When it is under our control, but we lose the good things in life anyway, it's usually because we didn't fully understand the gravity of the situations we were in. It's only in hindsight where we realize what we needed to do differently to keep what we had, but by then it's too late and we're only left with permanent emotional or physical scars that never fully heal.

I definitely agree that suicide is the best option, but sometimes it's the hardest one to do. I don't know why it has to be this way, but I wish it wasn't.

It's not like that for everyone, just for the most unlikely people. About 1% of people die by ctb, and typically bad luck is a big factor.

this question is differcult to answer because we are judging based on the expectation of a fair system, equal amounts of joy & suffering.
..but it doesn't seem to work that simply.
(this is just an opinion it has no value as relevant information)
on a scale of 1 to 10 joy seems to get to 7 or 8 , but suffering doesn't even have a scale , its a seemingly bottomless pit & that is why
i am an anti-natalist who could never bring children into this world based on the probability of suffering,
...... the same situation occurs in nature, it is not restricted to humans. however humans have the ability to discontinue the path of
suffering by not breeding.........

It seems obvious to me, assisted suicide is much better than natural death

* quick vs slow
* painless vs horrible
* control vs gacha
* solid plan vs no plan
* illegal vs legal

4 : 1 should be 5 : 0.

Regardless both suicide and natural death still tranfer pain/trauma to those who were left behind, suicide is better for the deceased one.

Why is joy brief and pain/suffering lasting?
I think it has roots in our biological programming. Suffering makes us want to change and act to alleviate it, and joy/pleasure is like a carrot on a stick, it motivates us. If we had plenty of long-lasting pleasure, we wouldn't want to change anything since we're already experiencing something "good" and don't want to risk it going away. So I guess it has to do with our evolution and programming/natural selection.

The truth is, that suffering is the reality of this life, anything positive never lasts long as that is the nature of existence, it's impossible to escape from some form of pain or struggle. If someone is experiencing something positive, then it will create more pain when that thing is taken away.

I do think that non existence is preferable to any life and that to leave this world is the best possible thing to happen. With life comes unlimited potential to suffer, and all suffering is unnecessary. I believe that life should not be a thing in the first place, we were all perfectly fine not existing until we were forced to live. There is no point to staying alive and struggling for decades just to die eventually.

That's a very good question. Sometimes I wonder if it's a matter of perspective. I know of relentlessly positive people who never seem to let the bad stuff bring them down. (Of course- that could all be an act- or they could just be delusional). I kind of doubt the idea of suicide has ever crossed their minds- they seem to genuinely love life.

A friend once passed on a quote or video to the end that the brain can't distinguish a real life event from a fantasy. So, to that end, if we keep thinking of nothing but doom and gloom, it's hard to see the world as anything but awful. I think it just becomes a vicious cycle as your brain starts to see everything as a means of persecuting you.

I guess positive people either naturally or forcefully make themselves focus on the positive. I guess they believe they are entitled to the good things in life and confidently go out and seek them and feel bolstered by all their achievements.

I have a feeling it is possible to change your mindset but I reckon it would take a massive amount of effort and I can't be bothered. Suicide seems a lot more appealing...

But the complete opposite often happens. when suffering gets too much, you're depressed or whatever, you lose all motivation and don't even try any more because you know nothing will get better.

maybe because we're so geared to pain /normality due to past experiences that joy feels like fresh air? for me thats the case and i never even get to fully absorb the joy.

When I feel joy, I still want to die, I realize that happiness is fleeting and pain is permanent, life doesn't make sense for me

Тhat's it. Chase carrots to suffer less or feel rewarded. Yet our tolerance for those yummy carrots neurotransmitters grows so damn badly. It's never enough. And here comes suffering. And some of us have really low emotional pain threshold. We stay overwhelmed with suffering that motivates us rather ctb than non-stop chase carrots
