Why is everyone shitting on politics and the media when they are contributing to the problem themselves?
Everyone loves to shit on "the media". "The media" simplifies things, voyeurism/sensationalism, doesn't go into details.
There is some truth in it. But the media often reflects human interests. And most people are not interested in reading in-depth, intricate articles. I look at news outlets which articles get clicked the most and often sensationalistic articles are on the top. One could argue we don't know in which direction the causality goes. Maybe in both direction. The media structures incentives news similar to fast food consumption. On the other hand, there is a real demand for that because the human mind is often interested in stories that involve sex, drugs, violence etc.
The thing is we (me too) we are contributing to the problem. In our era we love to share our opinion on stuff. We define our identity on our political opinions. But when everyone shares their opinion populists can easily exploit that. There emerges a relativity about the truth when everything is a matter of opinion. Experts that express uncertainty and admit limited knowledge are not taken serious enough.
I like to watch Secular Talk. And he emphasizes that concrete policy issues often go under the radar of the public eye. And there is some truth in it. He probably has a bigger emphasis on policy oriented politics than right-wing influencers. But in some ways his way of reporting about politics is part of the problem. There is like an obsession about Trump. On the right and left. I am probably part of the problem too. But it seems to be a big waste of time to speculate about his health, the size of his penis etc. I think the Epstein relation is worth investigating though. Many outlets prefer to report about personalities instead of policy related coverage. And that's an issue. I also think if people hate how much the media simplifies its content. Why aren't more people reading scientifical articles about politics? Maybe due to the fact it is more tedious, takes more times, has less clear answers and often is topdown communication for most people. And there is an economy that thrives on keeping the consumer a sheep of course.
