I have always believed that society demands people endure the loss of their sense of self, endure prolonged suffering, and survive in a state of numbness—all simply to meet society's expectations of what it means to "being alive," rather than out of genuine concern for the individual's feelings.
That is why I believe the ability to die painlessly should be a human right for everyone, not a privilege. Most importantly, people should have the right to choose the trajectory of one's own life. I'm increasingly convinced that the very act of biological reproduction is an extremely cruel form of hell.
Looking back at history, many motivations for having children stem from personal needs and interests, such as seeking a sense of purpose, needing a child as a laborer, or relying on a child for one's own retirement security… Yet after birth, children often face immense life pressures and psychological burdens. When some express suicidal thoughts, they are met with incomprehension or even accusations that suicide is selfish.
No one chooses the circumstances of their birth, yet society deliberately restricts the autonomy to choose one's end through euthanasia. I feel that most opponents of euthanasia have never experienced such extreme suffering, which is why they interfere with others' right to choose—unaware that not everyone can live a happy life. I've noticed that most people with suicidal thoughts don't interfere with others' life-and-death decisions, yet those who oppose euthanasia always presume to interfere with others' right to choose. If the only choice is between a life of suffering and a painful death, and society goes out of its way to emphasize just how agonizing certain methods of suicide are, why not legalize euthanasia? Is it because society needs to keep those painful methods of suicide around to deter people from choosing them?
When I think about the 8 billion people in this world, and how many face agonizing, cruel circumstances, I feel utterly hopeless. The very act of giving birth is essentially gambling with a new life, once social unrest or war breaks out, many new lives suffer needlessly. Therefore, not being born means there is certainly no suffering.
Sorry if this is a bit Scattered. Thank you taking the time to read this.
