Why do we still call it Nembutal?

It's not even in use anymore, can't we call it the chemical by its name, which is Barbiturate. Too long? Barbs that is. or B even.

Am I the only person who doesn't like this Nembutal or N thingy, it is the name of a brand which does not even produce the liquid anymore.

There are other barbiturates; this is sodium pentobarbiturate.

I think using Nembutal avoids confusion. Everyone knows exactly what it means. Barb or B is not specific enough.

Does that stuff get instantly seized if it's discovered in a package at customs? How would N compare to a combo of Ox & Xan for sedation?

It's the brand name, like most people call generic drugs by their brand name e.g. Xanax or Lexapro. It's class is a barbiturate, but it's Pentobarbital. I think most people just stick with N because most people would be confused reading P.

If tylenol was discontinued people in the US would still call acetaminophen tylenol. I worked in pharmacy so I'm used to swaps in proper names. People usually just say whatever is easiest and Nembutal/N has a ring to it.

N your life, end your life, N. Got to get my P or my B just sounds silly in a way. Is my P legit!? I don't know, N is just fitting.

Even if the brand does not produce it, sometimes names remain for historical purposes.

The best example I can think of right now, the country of Ceylon changed its name to Sri Lanka in 1972, yet there is still the Bank of Ceylon and they still export 'Ceylon tea'.

Or the Porsche Taycan Turbo S does not have a turbocharger because it is electric, but retains the naming convention of its traditional internal combustion models.

Yeah I figured PPeH is the reason. Outside of suicide discussion no one I know call it Nembutal. Most call it Barbs or B. At the end of the day folks here call Sodium Nitrite Sodium Nitrite, not Apex or smth.

Yes, just a naming convention that is well established in the culture here. Many people have also expressed criticism of the term 'pro-life', suggesting more abrasive alternatives ranging from 'anti-choice' to 'pro-torture' (!). But a lot of the terminology dates back countless years so it tends to stay, warts and all.

Yeah I've always thought it would be better to call it by it's proper name. If you asked a vet for nembutal would they even know what you mean? It's like calling chocolate Rowntree's.
