surely they're more fatal than most other methods, save for a shotgun

"A Florida man woke up with a severe headache and asked his wife to drive him to a hospital, where doctors found a bullet lodged behind his right ear."

The issue is that they are not destructive enough to guarantee anything. A person would need to be precise to assure death. Otherwise they just end up with injuries.

I think people value a "peaceful" death and the body horror of any time of firearm blowing someone's head open doesn't quite fit this tranquil scene. My boyfriend's grandfather used a handgun, but my boyfriend carries lasting trauma from being the first person to find him. Is it effective? Oh, absolutely. Is it easy? If you live in somewhere like America, of course. But it's gory, violent, and has terrible consequences if you don't shoot correctly.

They're messy, they're violent, they're highly politicized, they're not a guarantee, there are lots of reasons but it really all comes down to there being better methods available.

A lot of failed attempts with handguns are bc of bad placement like under the chin and/or using a cartridge that isn't powerful enough.

Most people don't have access to them. In America though, they are the most reliable method of suicide, as long as you do it right. But it is a brutal scene for anyone who sees the body.

Hand guns do not receive hate. The people who try and kill themselves with hand guns simply do not know what they are doing. If you use a full-metal jacket bullet at the side of your head, the chances of failure are relatively high. If you use some little .22 caliber bunny rabbit round, you're just going to mess yourself up more.

Hollow-point, 9mm or larger, in the mouth pointed slightly upwards, and you are going to die quickly 99% of the time, hand gun or otherwise. Both my husband and I grew up around guns with military/hunting fathers. There are five guns in our house now. I'm just too scared to use them for CTB. But it would definitely be quick and easy.

Accountability.
It's easier to blame handguns, etc compared to anything else.
Properly used, they are fatal. It's just SI is a bitch to deal with.

I don't think they get hate, they are just not very accessible to people like us.

Mental ill health makes it hard to legally get one and here in the UK it would be all but impossible to get one with a medical record like mine. I think a gun would be the opposite of hated, its the holy grail. Fast, painless and reliable.

Painless is far from correct unless you succeed, unfortunately.

Thanks for responding! I also grew up with guns, but all I was really allowed to shoot as an underweight girl was my .22 rifle. This is the gun I have access to, do you think it would work? I don't know a lot about handguns. This is for the future so it's quite alright if not. https://www.championfirearms.com/Airweight-Model-642-38-Special-P-163810-p/163810.htm

Oh for sure. I meant compared to other guns. Bigger guns seem to be favored in the firearms thread is all

Best to do research on which gun/bullet more likely to get the job done of course.

But if you shoot yourself in the temple with a pistol it's likely to kill you, but not guaranteed. Even if using gun method, definitely do research before hand.
