Is anyone aware of this? It's really creepy. There are loads of pictures and videos online of people in India hanging themselves, usually full suspension by ceiling fan and the women usually use their sarees. The government have even introduced new ceiling fans that you can't hang yourself from.

They must have them fans secured really well. I know under some weight, they will come down.

But I guess they are using whatever they can find to use to hang.

Oh man. India are the Champions.
You could replace the word ceiling fan
with almost anything.
Maybe overpopulation and lack of hope?
Or maybe they are all just
Children Of Kali, heading home.

First time I tried to hang myself was on my ceiling light and the whole thing ripped off and I woke up on the floor

Yeah, when I was in my teens, I was fucking around trying to see if I could spin by hanging on with my hands, and the whole thing came down on top of me.

Lack of options.

no money to afford N or other methods, no transportation to get other tools, and many live in very closed in societies so talking to others about problems in frowned upon. Heck you are not expected to have problems as long as you are going to school and helping the family with expected responsibilities.

Much of India is very traditionalist and communal. Modern day treatments such as medication and talk therapies are frowned upon.
There are a good bit of train suicides on YT in India; also nitrogen. Maybe those are the people who have bikes, live closer to transport or have resources.

I don't think it's the fans, I think it might be the ceilings. Concrete vs drywall

Ceiling fans In India are very firmly arranged. Just see a video of it.. and you will get the view. Its just that there are no easily available methods... like people overdose , try to acquire SN , or use helium, nitrogen when they have awareness... which means they need to search about them on the internet (coz this is a taboo topic , you can't find info readily available everywhere.. and you need to know the sources too) . And we remember what we see.. say if we read or saw somewhere that someone ctb by hanging.. along with the picture in newspaper (some are gruesome to print the picture too) and often see in movies that people ctb by hanging, thats what comes to your mind obviously when you just desperately want to end it all. Desperate times call for desperate measures... you do what you see..

when I was 18, I planned to ctb. I was just desperate, and i don't know anything about methods. the first thing that came to my mind is.. hanging. I tried to do full suspension(idk partial was a thing.. a person doing partial a bit rare here.. no exposure to it ). later, i thought to take mosquito repellent liquids, later i tried to OD on meds.. In my case, I knew about those methods.. by only that what I have seen in some movies, news. I have no exposure to things at that time.
Also, at a certain place.. if more people ctb with the same method, it will have more coverage and people will do the same method( copycat suicides).. like the 'detergent suicides' in japan.
Also you don't need to acquire any supplies for hanging, which is a major factor that influences some to choose it. And the number of suicides can increase when the number of people increase.. that can be a factor too.

I am indian, born in canada though, been there a few times.

Almost 1/5 of suicides come from india in this world so you will read a lot of stories about it, it's just numbers.

marriage failure is seen as a death sentence, it brings shame on your family. If a woman's family can't afford a dowry the women kill themselves, in a fucked up way this is expected to be the end result, that you are not suitable for anyone. You're a burden and nothing alone there as a woman.

Rape is prevalent because sex is not easy to get for men outside of marriage, in turn that woman can be seen as impure so they hide it. you can get in trouble and get a quick rep for even talking to the opposite sex in public.

Bollywood has many a film where suicide is romanticized and they have the largest film industry in the world.

Farmers commit suicide over a bad season of crops as they are financially destroyed.

Young people are expected to succeed in school and then take care of the family and if they can't/don't they ctb. (There was a thread here about an indian student who did just that)

LGBQT - forget about it. hide it and marry the sex you are "supposed" to marry, completely bury who you are.

There is no value for life the way it is in 1st world countries.

Even the people from india who come here think this way. you have no idea the amount of indian people who have been rude to me because im an unmarried woman, like I don't matter. Without a husband/father/brother i am not worthy of respect.

My mom was arranged married at 17 in india and because she could never leave my psycho dad due to the shame it would bring, she many a time attempted to leave the world period. when i ran away because of my extremely violent dad, my own family disowned me. No one ever spoke to me again. as women you don't leave unless it's for your husbands house.

In a nutshell pride, honour, respect, reputation is valued above all. It is about everything everyone else sees.

So if suicide In a society is prevalent and on some level acceptable, they lose their SI. We have it because in our society it is not.

Hanging is the cheapest, although poison is huge too. Keep in mind they don't all have access to the internet and information like we do. They keep it old school, no fancy sn/n for them.

No info on ceiling fans.

Troopers indeed:

You learn to keep the entire process, from ideation to execution, to yourself. For a lot of these people, it's difficult to know how long the idea was gestating for.
And you see most women who commit suicide by hanging dangling by their dupattas, not their saris. At least, that what it always looks like to me.

oh my god. I read of a lady who tried to ctb under an electric train but the conductor stopped. She got up and climbed to the top of the train like Queen Kong and grabbed the electrified wires. I hate how much pain she had to be in, to be so desperate, but come on, I'll say it:
*that bitch was a Boss!*

Yes, I've also seen a few videos of people in India electrocuting themselves by grabbing onto the wires above a train. They must've been truly desperate.

Well, there are a lot of people in India, right? More people in shitty situations = more suicides = more chances that the suicide is with a ceiling fan and scarf.

Honestly, though the Indians manage to do it with such elegance. I mean, I've seen a few videos and I doubt any of them browsed Sanctionedsuicide.com before taking the plunge. And as others have pointed out, India must have stronger ceiling fans than us here in the West.
