I read that the explanation is : in autumn and winter, everybody struggles with a sad mood because days are short and it's cold, but when spring comes, most people enjoy life again, but depressed people are still depressed, so it's harder and that's why suicides rates are higher at these seasons. I agree with this idea because I have the same feeling (I'm also disabled and when I see people do normal things, I'm more depressed).

Maybe the site is getting DDOS'd but when they went under maintenance they got better DDOS protection and we're just seeing it's capacity to handle more load?

Your last sentence really resonated with me because I'm in the same situation. Where I live in California the weather is sunny and warm year round. Everyone is out doing things and enjoying life while I sit here and rot. I feel a lot better when it's rainy and cloudy, which is practically never.

the mods published a statement about how the site went down due to a payment issue with their hosting provider.
also a ddos protection is typically put infront of the server/destination (and they already seem to have that with Cloudflare), which means that these are less likely to be bots I would assume
