I know it can be contraindicated in people with psychosis/schizophrenia but it has shown anecdotally to help millions with anxiety and depression. Why is my psychiatrist close minded about trying it?

cannabis don't really help as much as people attend to think.
It's not a magic pill
Yes it's relief pain, and in rare cases it can help in mental health problems.
But there is a lot of Side effects of using cannabis, especially mental (can be self-testifying)

The lack of research into how/why cannabis functions and what its long-term effects are. That kind of stuff is a lot more persuasive to doctors than any amount of anecdotal evidence.

Whatever issues I already had were worsened immeasurably by whatever strains of cannabis I smoked. Sorry to provide a negative review, but I thought it would cure my anxiety and relax me and it caused me to become increasingly manic until an eventual psychotic break and recurrent psychotic episodes every year since.

I don't get how people can ever smoke that, where exactly the fun in that crap

In the past I worked with someone who smoked every day 1 gram, he was dumb as a shoe but he seems to like it

Lots of long term side effects. Added health risk if you smoke it. Particularly harmful to teenagers.
Like any self medication, potential short term benefits at the cost of long term complications.
Doctors are coming round to the potential benefit of CBD oil.

the effects on anxiety and depression are highly overrated and there's a lot of contradicting evidence on whether or not it does anything for those conditions, there's even evidence suggesting that it can actually be detrimental for depression and anxiety both long and short term.

it's the same reason why they don't prescribe to you research chemicals that show a lot of promise in the treatment of whatever condition you have. anecdotal evidence is usually not great and could be influenced by millions of things happening in your life that make you think something is working when in reality it could be anything.

don't get me wrong, I use weed... actually I abuse weed, and it helps me with chronic pain and nausea more than anything but I don't try to rationalize it as being some sort of miracle tonic. right now there's a really toxic weed culture of people saying that it cures every single condition that you have, with no side effects and no addiction, and that's just factually incorrect and disingenuous. maybe the real reason why most doctors don't care about weed is that it may as well be considered snake oil at this point, some people can't shut up about it being the ultimate cure-all drug.

True, it may relieve pain temporarily, but as a long term solution it is terrible. First of all, if it is consumed by smoking, you damage your lungs. Inhaling anything other then air into your lungs is harming them. So, a long term consumption via smoking cannabis is looked down upon because of that.

Then, of course, you can consume it as an edible. It's proven to be much healthier, but many professionals claim that prolonged use of cannabis can damage your mind and make you more passive, among other things.

I noticed you said you're from Ireland in another post. Me too but I want to tell you that there is hope of legalisation in Ireland. To answer you're question I think because some doctors don't care because they heard one negative thing and never bothered to look into it.

Their profession. Other than that, I don't think all doctors are. Doctors especially ask for people to hold off until 25 or so. When their brains are done fully developing
