Who's your role model in committing suicide? Like who do you look up to? Mine has to be Ellie Soutter, such a brave girl for committing the act.

It is sad to hear about how much some people suffer in life but at least now they are free from their pain. Rest in peace to all those that are gone. I personally envy all those who have passed away as I want to permanently rest. When I am dead nothing can hurt me.

Wow, I just read a few articles about her. So young. That's pretty sad, especially at such a young age to commit suicide.

I remember reading about Ellie Soutter at the time. In the news, they suggested she missed a plane and, as a result, a competition, or something. I remember thinking that it must've been more than that.

Mine is 'Peter Bergmann', although no one knows his real name. He went out of his way to make sure no one identified him.

I also love reading about these...

I don't really have one personally. I always find suicide to be sad, even if I can completely understand the person's decision under the circumstances. And learning about different methods isn't really a collector's hobby of mine. Although I of course want information about how to do things without risk of surviving with permanent damage, I wouldn't say I admire anybody more or less for managing to do things efficiently.

I think her story is more sad than brave. I always feel extra sad when very young people ctb. I know that isn't a popular opinion around these parts though.

Sulli comes to mind a lot because I'm rather into kpop. She seemingly had it all but still made the decision to end things. Hanging was her method and I don't know how she pulled it off. I could never do hanging.

Closest that comes to mind for me is Etika. He served as more of a cautionary tale for me though. I know he was in a lot of pain and the amount of harassment he was receiving didn't help but I firmly believe that he should have waited about another year for the rest of the Smash Ultimate characters to come out because almost all of them are characters he would have been truly excited for. Maybe it's wrong to expect that he'd have been able to continue living for that long but it certainly gave me the idea to wait until they were all out and to make sure I wait until everything else I'm excited for is experienced by me before I finally go. I hope the afterlife has ways to still play games but I kinda doubt it so that's why I made a list of things I have to experience before I die later this year.

If I had something to live for, even just being excited for an upcoming movie, or video game release, I would probably stick around too. I guess that is how I know I am depressed, because nothing is exciting to me anymore, I don't derive any joy from doing anything. No matter what I am doing, I'm just depressed and hating life. I have literally nothing to live for.

But to answer the OP, I would probably say my late husband... I never expected he would actually do it, but he did and I keep thinking if he did it, then I can too. I always told him I wouldn't be able to live without him, and that if anything happened to him it would absolutely destroy me.

Budd Dwyer. Dude just went for it. Yeah I know he probably shouldn't have traumatised so many people but I've got to hand it to him, he went out in a blaze of glory.
Forever remembered. RIP Budd.

It helps that I already know exactly what I can and can't live for. Just a few more months for me. At least no once can say my suicide was impulsive since I've been waiting for years.

Sylvia Plath. She put milk out for the cats and stuck her head in her gas oven as if it was a baked potato. I have a gas oven, but can't run the gas without ignition. I don't feel like roasting my head. But her death, after that body of work—poetry.

Or artist (neo-dada) Ray Johnson, who jumped off a bridge in Long Island and swam out to sea. Many suspect his death was performance art, but he left no notes, etc. But if you're going to go, make it memorable, make it art…

Sylvia for me too. Her reading of 'Lady Lazarus' plays in my head often.

Ruslana Korshunova, a famous beautiful model who threw herself from her balcony without a note. 2008

Lyle Stevik, who committed suicide in an hotel room being sure to not give her real name.

Mary Anderson, same as Lyle.

And the Annandale Jane Doe aka Christmas tree lady who died alone at night in an infant cemetery.

Beat me to it. I wouldn't say I idealize his death or anything, but that's how I want to go—by hanging with my favorite album on. (Hard to choose between Closer and Secondhand Daylight, though.) JD was really the band that showed me the path to enjoying music. As it turns out, I am just extraordinarily picky about what I like, but when I do find it, it hits like nothing else.

I've been heavily invested in his story, as well as the band's for about five years now. This partially extends to New Order as well. Perhaps it's silly, but I'm enraptured. He may have lived a bit longer, despite the depression, if it weren't for the meds. I've heard that was what made it much worse, as well as him not really being able to perform because of the fits. Gloomy case all around, but I always wonder if he would've written a novel someday, or branched out to some other outlet instead of performing. I love his lyrics more than anything—they've been a huge inspiration to me. It's a shame, seeing as everyone around him, from what I've gathered, thought of him as a kind, quiet leader, if a bit self centered sometimes. Sucks for his daughter, especially.

I don't know about this question, though; I try to refrain from romanticizing suicide, despite my original paragraph.

I quite like the mentions of Ian Curtis and Sylvia Plath... They both came to mind immediately when I read the title of the thread—it is nice to see their names here.

Another who has long had an impact on me is Evelyn McHale, the subject of the infamous 1947 photograph: 'The Most Beautiful Suicide' by Robert Wiles. The calmness of her restful repose atop the crumpled car feels almost profound in its peacefulness—if only all of us were able to depart with such gracefulness. (Although the damage to a stranger's car seems a bit obscene, I suppose, however I doubt there is a 'purely victimless' way to go.)

He ordered the murder of millions of Jews, homosexuals, and those who protested his nationalistic politics. What kind of role model chooses to end the life of others in such a horrific way against their will, and then when he realizes he is on the brink of being caught - ctb? I understand the right to choose for myself, and the right for others to choose for themselves - but not to choose for others, which is murder. In Hitler's case, it was mass murder - genocide.

Always nice to meet a fellow Joy Division and Ian Curtis fan. Closer is truly a perfect album. Hanging, however, will not be my method!

Had completely forgotten about Soutter, definitely a "role model" now.

Yeah I don't think it was exactly the most ethical way to go, but it's definitely been a useful resource for which type of gun to get. And the video has been helpful for understanding what you leave behind. From what I've read, it's likely that he was guilty, but I still kind of respect it though. Also "Hey Man Nice Shot" is a great song, so we have Budd to thank for being the inspiration to that.

I want to say Ian Curtis or Kurt Cobain as well, but it's hard for me to "idolize" in any way people who kill themselves but leave behind young children. I think once you're directly responsible for another life like that (one that you decided to bring into the world you so desperately wanted to leave), you lose all rights to end your own life.

I have a lot of respect for people like Soutter who are young and willfully leave the world before they create any unnecessary dependencies on them, and recognize that they can't be happy and do something about it.
