This is a response from a user that I found in a discussion about transgender people.

I would like to know what you would respond to this user.

I would try to give it a response but i am extremely exhausted and have a thick mental fog.

Obvious cis person who doesn't know the struggle of being born in the wrong sex. Not really worth taking them seriously.

But this "scientific" reasoning is following the assumption that transgender people are delusional.

A MtF individual doesn't wake up one morning and say, "You know what, I want to be a woman now because why not?"

There's a reason behind their decision, and we (as in this person and people who think like them) should respect that or understand it rather than insinuate they're out of touch with reality. Also, it's their life, so, as long as they're not harming anyone, why does it matter?

the science on transgender issues simply disagrees with this guy. As detailed in the SOC-8, the most reputable resource used by medical professionals for the treatment of everyone trans, being transgender isn't simply "reality denial". Instead, it's a clearly defined psychological phenomenon that's associated with the very negative symptom of gender dysphoria, which responds to one treatment method with a pretty high success rate: Transitioning. That's what works. Everything else doesn't work, and in fact usually makes things worse.

Those are the facts. You can go back and forth with misinformed and overconfident idiots like this guy for ages, but at the end of the day we don't listen to a drunk peasant when we want to build a proper bridge. We ask the civil engineer. And similarly, we don't listen to random reddit dipshits when it comes to the treatment of a psychological or medical issue. We listen to the people that have studied medicine, psychology, endocrinology and so on. And what they say is pretty clear.

We should stop listening to people that have zero knowledge. It's obvious that he gives zero fucks about science. He didn't even bother to check what the current consensus was.

Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Although not all health specialists have decent knowledge on these topics, because even them can say things like this guy. :notsure:

yeah well, medicine is a pretty large field, right? Not every engineer will know how to build a bridge either. And some docs just won't know anything about trans-issues.
What matters is that the health specialists who are actually specialised on trans issues are in pretty strong agreement with each other, and pro-transitioning.

I totally get you though, it's exhausting to deal with the constant stream of misinformation. If it helps, this is probably something that will work itself out within the next 30 or so years, as our knowledge grows and treatment options get even better - the current trends are looking very promising. At least in the "cultural west". Everywhere else will take a bit longer still.

I would not answer this person per se. Mostly out of apathy but also because it's probably pointless.

Their opening sentence, mainly: "...I think it's denying material reality and it's incompatible with science.", does not leave much room for discussion. The casual comparison to schizophrenia is not only stupid, it's offensive, designed to inflict harm. They disrespect not only those who suffer gender dysphoria they also speak so flippantly about schizophrenia, like they have any knowledge about that. But I'm assuming a lot here and my apathy makes me not want to delve deeper. Imo, they are a hater, in the saddest (and maybe truest?) sense of the word. This is an assumption on my part.

Further, they never define what they mean by any of their terms: material reality AND science, (and these are pretty broad and encompassing terms, to say the least) because they think they're correct already. And to actually go down those rabbit holes, this is where my apathy comes in... They're trying to frame the discussion in a way that they've already won so there's no point. They seem like a reactionary. Facts don't care about your feelings type but whenever you engage them, there entire argument is feels and not facts. This person is probably ignorant and a hater. Not a serious thinker with an inability (maybe innate) to view the world from a perspective outside their own. Or maybe I'm wrong and I'm just horribly jaded and cynical. Or both could be true? Idk, take what anyone says with a grain of salt I guess.

Alternativly, I think if you're so inclined you could break down their argument point by point pretty easily. They most likely won't listen but readers might. People who actually think like this view the world through a straw and they get mad when you point out they're not seeing the whole picture. It's exhausting. Sorry for the wall of text to basically say I would do nothing heh...
