Discussion What to do about pets

I have one animal left, who is quite old but still very healthy. A bit high maintenance though. The other pets have all passed. I am planning to CTB some time in the next few months. I will probably have a vet come in to put this little one down at home with me. It will be peaceful; at home. It's lived a good, long, life, and won't have to suffer with any more old-age issues or potentially being re-homed. But it's still hard. I'm so afraid of bringing the vet in, letting go of my little one, and then not being able to follow through with my own plan, or being stopped. I don't know then if I could forgive myself in the aftermath of that. Or have people know that's what I did. I don't know.

That's a tough one. Would it be possible to hang on until it's the right time for your pet?

It could be years....no way of knowing. I'm actually bringing this one to the vet tomorrow to get a full physical, but I don't expect any issues. The thing is, this little one won't know the difference. Just will know a lifetime of love and then it stopped. I don't believe in heaven or hell or the rainbow bridge or whatnot, so that helps I guess. Sigh. But I cannot CTB and not deal in advance with this one whose life is in my hands, really.

As somebody who has adopted several rescue dog, I can vouch that, at least dogs, have the ability to identify and connect with a new master.

It sound heartbreaking to think about your precious buddy having the ability to get over you...but I think it is something most pets could do.

I belive they will remember you, but I don't think they are wired as deep as us to expect our pets to never get over our departure. There is difficulty even expressing your death or departure to a pet. They will likely just chalk it up to abandonment, and move on with their lives with the resources their new environment can provide. I belive we are more connected to them, they are are connected to us.

I agree with you. For a lot of reasons I don't think this would be the case here. There are behavioral issues, plus old age, daily medicine, doesn't get along with other animals....it was already a last chance rescue. If I thought there was a way that rehoming would work I would of course do that first.

I see it may be different where you are. I know with my vet I had to "argue" the point that this was the best option.

Interesting. Yeah, I just called a place and they sent out a vet who talked to me about the (legitimate and eventually fatal with suffering) issue my pet had and she didn't ask a whole lot of questions. Good to know this may be an anomaly.

Either wait till the cat passes or put it down. Hard to trust people so giving the cat away is a bit risky. People love to abuse animals for some reason.

You are right Made. I could never abandon an innocent like that. We really are all they have. Treat an animal with respect, and compassion...I cannot write anymore...sorry. Please do not give the little one away...thank you.
