So I went to the Hospital back during Late October of last year and I was in a Ward for 6 days. Wanna know how much the bill was after being on my Parent's Health Insurance...?

$52 FUCKIN THOUSAND DOLLARS

Damn I didn't know staying alive had to be so expensive. Ever since then, I've kept shit to myself and have been fairly doing good. But to have to pay all of that off and knowing it's similar to College debt....WOW

It's disgusting the amount of money that they try to squeeze out of you. My suicide attempt last year left me in the hospital for a week, then the psychward for 3 weeks. At the end of everything, the bill was over 250k. Insurance covered all of it. This is why people can't get the help they need because money is apparently more important than anything else.

And on top of that, it can make the person even more suicidal than the person was ever before. I'm not a fan of the U.S. Health Care System by all means but damn seeing that opened my eyes to things that I never saw before. Capitalists bastards.

My family can afford it but I can't. Right before my Parent's Health Insurance was going to cover it, it ended. Leaving me with that much amount of debt and having no time for setting up my own insurance.

Fuck me, right?

Agreed. The last thing someone needs that is going through a mental health crisis is thousands upon thousands of dollars they owe in medical fees. That surely will help them recover and get back on their feet.

I'm really sorry you have to deal with this. Is there some form of medical assistance you can apply for?

Terrifying stuff, in other words if you plan to go make sure it counts, otherwise itll be a pay day for the "good-hearted" folks down at the clinic.

Yep. My ambulance bill had me in a panic. I wasn't even in the state of mind to be deciding if I really wanted to do that or not. Good thing I was able to get it knocked off after signing some shit. Some others aren't as lucky. Pay-to-live is shitty. Especially when it's not/barely your choice.

Mental health system can be a scam. A person wants to die, then forced to stay in a PSYCH ward, get a horrible experience from it, then pay for such a crappy stay.

It's like a legalized scam where someone wants to die but forced to pay to live in a prison. If life is that important, then the stay along with other necessities should be free.

It's not at all similar to college debt. You can bankrupt your way out of it. If you are young with negligible assets and limited earning potential this may be your best choice. to file for chapter 7 will be easy with limited income and assets. However you should first investigate if they will reduce payments or if you qualify for some financial assistance. There may be alternative routes than going BK.

If the hospital won't let you pay in monthly installments over many years they're likely to sue you and have a judgement against you which will accumulate heavy interest - in some US states it's well north of ten percent per year . So imagine having 5k roughly each year gone to that before even dinging the principal.

for older Americans it's tough to BK their way out of these medical debts because they have many assets accumulated but younger Americans can do it with less consequences. Yes it will stay on your file for about a decade but if you've noticed credit is handed out like candy , people even obtain auto loans shortly after BK.

I would consult someone IRL who is financially knowledgeable and who you trust

52k also seems high to me with insurance if you were just there on mental issues. You did not say what the visit was for which is probably for the best to protect privacy. Best wishes

Im in the UK so we dont get billed for hospital stays as the NHS is free. Lots of people moan about the NHS but in reality it can be much more shitty so can't moan really considering we don't have to pay bills like that. I'm curious though, what if you don't pay it? I mean, if your leg was falling off or you had some sort of other severe trauma they can't not treat you, right?

Very informative and thanks! The good news is that it's in monthly payments and I'm going to see if I can get some financial assistance by calling around. I don't know if I want to file for bankruptcy since it probably won't look good since I want to live on my own in this upcoming decade. I don't know how it'll effect my credit score and such. Like getting a loan or down payment on a house.

Hospital has the obligation to treat emergencies without prior payment. This is long-standing US law. For emergency services payment is not demanded upfront for obvious ethical and practical reasons

that said for these services they can basically stick you with a bill for whatever they want. And they can chase you with bank judgement , garnishments , liens , etc

Maybe they might garnish my wage if I refuse to pay for it :/

If I'm not mistaken I'm pretty sure you aren't obligated to pay it and if any debt collectors start harassing you then politely tell them to fuck off.

Check with your local (county) health office or assistance office for something called "community chest" or "community funds". It's a pool that banks and such put into and it pays for medical services if you're unable to pay. Not sure on criteria. If you do go the bankruptcy route be sure to check the rules & regs on what gets paid and what isn't. Depending on your situation forget the credit score, it's going to get tanked. There may be some kind of "hardship assistance" at the hospital, give them a call it can't hurt. Sometimes a hint of "I'm going to just not pay" gets a deal made.

Speaking of McD, our always fresh hollywood, and mighty carriers have you seen this:
