very embarrassing to admit but a homestuck fanfic from the past made me feel very bittersweet. usually romance kind of hits the spot. the fact that canonically a preferred outcome never happens, or maybe the preferred outcome lasted only fleetingly, as in steins;gate, are but two forms which most commonly contribute to this feeling
it's kind of the sad realization that the characters really cease to exist outside of that particular form of media, that their consummation in the end is just a hollowed out form of speculation, grasping still at the pleasure of the accompanying experience and the bitter melancholy which follows in the end. maybe that depends on the degree to which you rely on the form of media as escapism
