I'm going to be giving a summary on every method I've researched. I will also be sharing what I believe to be the best method. So here's my totally professional and amazing opinion.

SN: you basically fall asleep and either wake up or die. Supposedly there's no damage to the body if you fail this method but I'm sure there's a small possibility some damage could be done.

Hanging: you either die peacefully, die suffering or you are found too soon and are left to be a vegetable the rest of your life. Takes practice and can be very reliable if done correctly.

Gunshot: you either die or live the rest of your life with a disfigured head.

Carbon monoxide poisoning: you either die or become brain dead for the rest of your life. Overall it's just risky.

Tourniquet method: terrible method. Please don't try this unless you're seriously desperate.

Cutting throat/wrist: bro this isn't a movie I promise it isn't as easy as it seems. It's extremely painful and most likely won't work

Night night method: seems creative and also underrated. I feel like it's one of those methods where you need to do everything perfectly and not be found in order for a successful ctb

N: it's really expensive and there's only 1 known reliable source. You risk getting it taken by customs or getting jail time. There's a chance it might not arrive and I've heard there's a small chance it could fail. Supposedly this is the golden ticket to CTB methods which I personally disagree with.

CTB by police: if you're really overweight like me there's a higher chance of survival than if you were skinny. If you live in the USA your chances are most likely higher due to the fact that the police here are known for dumping mags of ammo into a people. Still, I don't think having lead dumped into your body at a 1,000 Mph, possibly surviving, and having to serve life in prison is worth the risk.

CTB by car crash: this method doesn't get enough credit as if you have a fast enough car, you can crash into a wall or tree and speeds almost impossible of surviving. This method definitely places number 2 on my top 3 list of most reliable CTB methods of all time. Very reliable if you're going fast enough.

Pills: Come on now…we should all know better. Pills do not work. Don't try unless you're willing to risk getting your stomach pumped and possibly feel like acid was dumped into your stomach.

Decapitation: this one places number 3 on my list. If you find yourself to be the careless/cold hearted type of guy or gal then I'm sure leaving your head behind for some poor fella to find wouldn't be much of a concern. There's a chance you just break your neck instead but either way you'll be gone.

Jumping: now this might come as a surprise to some of you guys but yes, I feel like jumping is the true golden ticket but maybe I'm just very biased on this one. If there's any golden ticket it's probably CTB by car crash but jumping is MY golden ticket. So this falls into the number 1 spot for me as the best CTB method.

If you made it to this point I just wanna say in all seriousness that you shouldn't consider CTB unless you truly know that is what you want. Whether you want to believe it or not, life has something positive to offer to everyone and it's up to you to decide if you consider that a reason to stay and keep on pushing or not. Much love to all of you and I wish you the best of luck with whatever decision you guys choose to make. See you on the other side.

This is the worst method, it should not be considered in my opinion- many people in these situations are shot and not killed and do get long prison sentences, which might be the worst thing that can happen to a depressed person, plus you do traumatize the police involved, which is really a terrible thing.

Hanging: you either die peacefully, die suffering or you are found too soon and are left to be a vegetable the rest of your life. Takes practice and can be very reliable if done correctly.
Hanging is two methods- partial, which can be more peaceful but which rarely works and which can cause damage, and full suspension, which is very reliable in done correctly but it is also terrifying, it can take a long time of being completely terrified- if pulled down early you can be a vegetable, this regularly happens.

Just more anti-choice proselytizing using fear tactics and other means to get their point across in order to see what "sticks". Just how I see it.

Nothing in life is perfect, so how could anyone expect any method to be without risk, especially if it isn't carried-out using best known practices? The efficacy of any method should always be carefully weighed and any potential risks assessed before settling on any method. Obviously, or it, at least, should be obvious, that some methods present better success rates than others.

I believe that it's an completely ignorant view suggesting that life always offers something positive. For so many people that's simply not the case, because as time goes on many people will just suffer more and more. There is nothing really positive about being endlessly tortured and that is the reality, and life really can get so horrific in ways beyond how we could possibly ever imagine it to. Life really shouldn't be glorified in such a way and you simply have no idea as to what others really go through as well so you cannot accurately make those claims. I see existence as being such a cruel and unnecessary burden that I was unfairly forced to endure and every waking moment of mine is spent wishing to leave. The only positive in any of this for me, is that no matter what someday I will die.

But I hope that you find the freedom that you wish for, it's really awful how so many of those methods involve risks with the potential for damage, that scares me and I do see it as being incredibly unfair how we have to potentially struggle so much in finding ways to die. I do envy those with the courage for the jumping method, that method sounds terrifying to me.

Okay no. I usually stay silent but I'm not having this. How is this in ANY WAY anti choice? He literally made a list of methods and gave information on their reliability, and he also gave his advice that life isn't all that bad. That is pro choice. He's not saying you shouldn't kill yourself - and even if he did, he still respects your personal decision:

it's up to you to decide if you consider that a reason to stay and keep on pushing or not

I don't understand this. And, to be quite frank, if this continues.. Media company won't be far off by calling this place pro death. Positivity is in no way pro life. These are people's lives, for Pete's sake.

Yes, you have every right to express what you want. But similarly, I have every right to be positive. I have every right to give perspectives of both suicide and life.

I'm gonna get my ass blasted for this, but I can't give a shit anymore man. I don't understand this.. Mentality where pro choice = seeing life as strictly suffering. It's not only suffering.

I agree with OP anyways. There is probably positive things in life for everyone.

If there's any golden ticket it's probably CTB by car crash but jumping is MY golden ticket. So this falls into the number 1 spot for me as the best CTB method.

In Gao Stone's Suicide book, there are some statistics on the lethality of various methods:

Gun 85%
Hanging 78%
CO gas 77%
Drowning 75%
Jumping 42%
Poisoning, drugs, cutting, stabbing, and various other methods, all below 15%. Some close to 5% or less.

So, you may be biased about jumping, but it's not a reliable method.

SN is not reliable either. People want an easy and peaceful way out, but it's neither peaceful, nor reliable.

Nitrogen gas and exit bag, which is not on the list, is reliable and available too.

I may be wrong but I have a feeling that whether you jump feet or head first can sometimes be the difference between living and dying.
Of course not from extreme heights, but I think it can often matter.

I don't believe it's possible for one's life to be completely negative.. a lot of people's suffering is due to things that are out of their control but in a lot of cases suffering is by choice. That may be a hard pill to swallow but it's the truth. Life doesn't have favorites. It's my belief that we are here to experience and to make something out of nothing. If you truly feel like your life is so terrible then it should be your right to leave. I believe that no matter how unimaginably unbearable life can be for someone, there is always opportunity to create something positive. Most of us have opportunity and throw it out the window sometimes both unintentionally or intentionally. We break ourselves down till our minds are convinced that we are stuck in some sort of hellish loop of suffering and feel like it's impossible to ever come back from or AT LEAST be able to pull meaning out of life. It's the little things in life that I enjoy. The little things help me see the bigger picture which in my case, is that we only have one shot at life and to make the most out of it is the ultimate goal. Personally I feel like I've experienced enough, felt enough, lived enough and am tired of the negatives outweighing the positives. I'm really just rambling on at this point but my whole point is that life always has something positive to offer to everyone, whether it's big or small, take as much of it as possible or give up and leave.
N2? Inert gas?
Seems slightly complicated but maybe I'm just dumb. SI shouldn't be forced to kick in but the mind is very powerful and knowing that you're about to die can easily trigger you to rip the bag off your head. Maybe it would be more reliable if restraints were used.

Anti choice? Lol okay. It's hard to spread some sort of positivity here without being made out to seem like I'm trying to play super hero and save lives. Still being able to crack a smile even when everything you know and love is going to hell is a beautiful thing.

I can't comment on the peacefulness as everyone will react different to it (judging by the side effects, it would be a nightmare for me personally), but it's reliable enough I think. 2 people I spoke with briefly have used it, 1 I spoke with a few months, and then a very, very dear friend of mine. And they are all dead unfortunately. It's a pretty niche method in the grand scheme of things... when you see poison suicide statistics it's people taking common household chemicals. There's just not enough "official and verified" data on SN suicides to get an accurate view, unlike the more common methods.

Just for example, from the book you mentioned (though this is a 1999 book...)

Though fwiw here is some more context for the percentage that the author gives it. (jumping)

I agree on the peacefulness. It's subjective. What I meant is that it's not worse or better than e.g. hanging or drowning (subjectively). On the other hand, CO poisoning or Nitrogen gas should be really peaceful (objectively).

Regarding reliability... A sample size of two is not large enough. (I am sorry for your loss.) When I say it's not reliable, I base my assumption on what I see on this forum. People vomit it, don't drink enough in the first place, or sometimes call for help after drinking it. Vomiting is involuntary, but still greatly adds to the unreliability.

The other problem is that SI always kicks in. Even if you are happy to go and firm in your decision, it always takes over in the last seconds, and you can't do anything about it. That is why I prefer a method where you can't back out. I think, this is the main mistake people make when choosing SN. I think, part of the reason people prefer it is that it is relatively slow and allows you to be in control all the way up to the last moments. For some people it may work. But for most people it will just result in a failed attempt, and their misery continues. Maybe that's what they want, maybe not, that's up to them to decide. But the odds of success are fairly predictable: Taking everything into account, there is a high probability they'll fail.

Sorry my post seemed a little combative, thank you for answering calmly. My mood is swinging like a pendulum right now. I'm so lost.

I see what you mean. I think people just want something less 'scary' than either drowning or hanging. Both gas methods on the other hand may seem too intimidating because of the setup (versus "just" chugging some pills and a cup of salt)

Yes, sorry, I did not mean to imply my sample size was large enough. My thinking of reliability is that if you can hold it down, it will very likely kill you. I wrongly assumed what your definition was. There's a spreadsheet on the forum somewhere with fatal attempts for a larger sample size (also one for non fatal attempts). And thank you. It has been rough. I wanted to reply to the last part too but all you'd get is an incoherent mess. (As if the above isn't already, at this point I'm just typing to distract myself and I can't actually write anything worthwhile lol)
