So what is your opinion about suicide jokes? Check off the boxes for all that you agree with. I'll start with this joke....

I think - and this is obviously very much personal - that jokes are just that, jokes.
For me it all comes down to the intent... was it to make people laugh? Was it to ridicule the subject? Was it just for the funsies? Did the person just want to share the joke?

I think there are way worse things in life than jokes, so I generally stand on the side of "it's fine whatever" argument when it comes to this.

If they're funny, I like them. The main thing is that they don't feel like a slap in the face

Interesting feedback! @lohre2000s intent - yes!!! @Set Real Goul definitely not too offensive, like there's a limit for me too in how offensive it is. @Awesomefoid67 for me too I can handle more from like-minded people. I think that's the same for jokes on other subjects too. It like an 'inside joke' has more leeway.

@Awesomefoid67 that's absolutely brilliantly hilarious!!!! One of the most important element of a joke is that while it is funny, it speaks a deep truth. IMO you nailed some deep truths. Well for me. Of course I'm not the voice of all people suicidal.

I once had a job where my co-workers and I would threaten to dispose of ourselves in absurd, over-the-top, completely unactionable ways in response to workplace stress. One evening as we were doing this, a co-worker who wasn't usually on our shift burst out of the room in tears because her husband had made a serious attempt at taking his own life once. We all learned a valuable lesson about both sensitivity and discretion that night.

I had never heard a suicide joke in my while life until someone posted one in a thread I was following here on SaSu. I just about died laughing. So I took to the net to find some, but only found four good ones, three of which I posted in this thread. Here is the fourth...

Jokes about suicide make me not want to kill myself, ironically. I remember one of my co-workers was getting frustrated at work and he said to everyone "There's my 13th reason!" It was everything I could do to not burst into a fit of giggles.

I LOVE suicide jokes. They're definitely not always appropriate, as some people can be mentally harmed by them, but if exposed to the right people, I love it. I have like ninety-something suicide memes saved to my gallery. I love just scrolling through them

@dragonofenvy and @Dinozauria really??? I've never heard anyone IRL crack a joke about suicide, and I've never seen a cartoon joke until the one I saw here recently, and I still haven't got to the links here that @Forveleth posted (which @Pluto predicted), so I've still never seen a suicide meme. The past year I've started cracking jokes about how I'm looking forward to dying to close friends and family, which are taken in horror. But they're getting used to it. I call it death therapy.

What I did see that absolutely bowled me over was the Ricky Gervais series After Life. That was a dramedy focusing on suicide. I've never seen a movie or series with suicide jokes other than this. It was so brilliant. So poignant. So real. So bittersweet. At times it was too much to stomach, but such is the topic. It was the closest anyone has ever come to understanding my suicidal part. I saw the whole series twice already (2024 and 2025) and will watch it again soon.

Has anyone else seen the series? Any thoughts on that?

You know the saying "All roads lead to therapy"? At my workplace we say "All roads lead to suicide." We crack jokes like that all the time. That's blue collar humor for ya.

I used to work in a tall building and we would all joke that [company] was lucky we could not open the windows to throw ourselves out and cause a scene and a bunch of paperwork for our boss.

people should be able to 'joke' about anything, and it should be up to the offended people to do whatever the fuck they want about their feelings, be they reasonable, or unreasonable.

@dragonofenvy and @Forveleth I can't imagine the possibility of joy and relief of being in such a supportive environment! Is that how you felt? I'm curious if they knew you guys were suicidal when they were saying stuff like that?

@aoseno perpetuo I would hate to be around you! I mean I'm definitely not PC and get pissed off at PC folk, but I'm not comfortable in the other extreme either. Obviously I can't be PC on this site. That's a no-brainer . But then you might hate being around me too! Or do you enjoy being unreasonable? To tell you the truth, after being rejected for euthanasia last year, I've become rather unreasonable with my death humour. I think the worst was last week, just a week after a close friend died, I said to a mutual friend of the deceased friend, "Fuck I'm so jealous. She stole my dream to die." Also last week I had birthday breakfast with another friend whom I hadn't seen since last September and I said excitedly (as I've been telling other friends lately), "Oh I've got great news!! I found out last year that people who have been seriously abused as children can die up to 20 years prematurely. I definitely qualify. So I figure at 62, especially with my other health problems, I've only got three years max to die." Huge smile on my face. Blank stare on hers. Am I totally bonkers? Or do others relate to this??

@Forveleth I've been looking at the memes thread and it's just brilliant. Such wisdom and depth in a lot of the humour. My suicidal part feels like she's finally landed on Planet Earth! Thank you.
