  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I hear this nomenclature a lot, but what exactly does it mean? Typically one gets accused of glamourising ctb if they do not repeat scripted cookie cutter platitudes or immediately shut down discussions that aren't hopeful or optimistic.

To even acknowledge that for some people, the thought of dying is our only solace, is too much for many to bear. It's more convenient to strawman us, thus comparing honest discussions around life and death to risqué, stylized vinnegettes of French film stars taking drags of cigarettes between their ruby red lips. Now, that's making an objectively harmful act look sexy and stylish.

Simply discussing ctb in a more open fashion is not romanticism, though many would like to claim so. Anyone else find that bs line to be completely nonsensical?

by the same logic we could accuse them of romanticising the pain and suffering of life.

Well for example, when some great artist takes their own life, it adds an extra layer of drama, a notion of dying for their art almost… Whether it's Sylvia Plath or Van Gogh or many others

the right to choose is somewhat limited in view of the system. For them, anything other than romanticizing life and using its value for any reason related to problems and sadness is wrong. They don't want ctb to be a viable alternative for anyone, they create their own romance concerning life.

Yeah, we supposedly glamorize suicide & death simply by finding them preferable to a miserable life.

I definitely think people can glamorize suicide, but websites like this often allow people to learn how to pass in a safe manner. And hopefully, get encouragement to try and resolve any mental issues / physical issues before ending their lives. If you've tried everything or come to a crossroads, you should feel empowered to do so.

I had it written in my notes once that I suffer from suicide ideation. Let's be honest it seems like a win win situation, on one hand you get to explore another dimension whether it be heaven or hell. On the other the suffering ends. But I don't tell my drugs n alcohol counselor, or friends. Because the last thing people in this world need is to worry about others.

It has always seemed to me that many people feel that when a person is that passionate and excited about something so "taboo" that they are just too young and immature to make that decision and that it should be gatekept only to those who are older. However I disagree, I am very passionate because I know its permanent, and understand it will bring me my happiness. I just wish it was easier to convey and make others understand.

I think of romanticizing suicide as depicting young and beautiful people suffering over some ideal like love, and then killing themselves in a way that is clean, fast and easy. It glosses over the grisly realities of death, the possibility of failing suicide, and the fact that many suicides have causes that are mundane rather than artistic and sublime. Of course there is the depiction of the self sacrificing suicide too, which is rather romantic as well.

My understanding is that someone who romanticizes suicide is infatuated with it or obsessed with the idea that suicide is the only answer to their problems. This is similar to the way someone might romanticize the idea of winning the lottery to the point they rely on it as a coping method to a money problem they are having.

The whole view of romanticizing suicide gives it a negative connotation in my opinion. Most people don't romanticize suicide and even if they do they probably have a good reason for it.

The pro lifers are delusional, they live under a delusion that life is always worth living. Anyone who wants to ctb is seen as irrational by them. They cannot comprehend what it is like to be suicidal. Some people have come to the perfectly rational conclusion that their life is not worth living. In a world as horrible as this, at least for me, suicide makes sense. We all deserve a right to die as we never asked to exist in the first place.

I think the problem is life being romanticised in our society, not death. There is this insidious insistence that life is worth living, that we must strive for a long life irrespective of its quality, that any obstacle can be overcome. Anyone who dares to suggest otherwise is considered mentally ill, irrational or promoting suicide.

On this site, I have observed that most of us aren't pleased to see members die. Seeing people die never fails to break my heart, but ultimately I do not want anyone to suffer against their will. We all deserve to have that choice. We all deserve peace, whatever form this takes for us. The majority of us would be very happy for those who can recover and lead a better life. However, we don't bombard each other with trite platitudes or insist that there is light at the end of the tunnel. We respect people's autonomy and right to choose what's best for them, whether that's life or death.

To discuss suicidality candidly and without a million disclaimers and platitudes is considered "romanticising suicide."

Yet it's perfectly acceptable to impose the view that any pain is surmountable, that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, that it's "selfish" or "the coward's way out", that only someone who lacks capacity would contemplate death, that it's okay to lock people up in wards and drug them against their will, that it's fine to systemically silence and censor any narrative that doesn't perpetuate the perspective that life is a sacred gift to be cherished.

That is what sounds like romanticism to me, on a global scale. It's brainwashing, denial and gaslighting, in which suicidal individuals are repeatedly silenced and shamed for not adhering to the status quo and believing that their lives are worth living no matter what they endure.

This is one of the many attacks (and defense mechanisms as well) that prolifers use to avoid any discussions about ctb.

Prolife and the continuity of humans as species is built on irrationality and heavy oppression. Any honest and rational discussion about ctb will snowball all of their arguments and way of thinking, and by domino effect, everything they believed in and thought about life will collapse and fall apart.

So its like a battle instead of rational discussions or thinking. This is a big problem because many humans are just programmed and indoctrinated by the species and are incapable of thinking that other people could suffer immensely until they are suffering themselves.
