  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

was it handed to them with their name on it and then did they throw it away? did they know what it was?
i mean if they dont even know what it is/that it exists/or that its for them, then you kind of cant blame them.
but if they know its for them, and that its a suicide note......a little heartless i guess, i mean.....youre not even curious about the contents??

If I got a letter that I knew was a suicide note I would probably not read it. There would hardly be anything nice in there.

I don't think anything of it. It's a personal choice.

I imagine for some people it would just cause even more trauma. Like I think most parents wouldn't want to read a suicide note from their child, or a sibling to read their siblings note or a partner to read their partners note ect.

I think a lot of people already feel guilty for not being able to stop the person it would just make them feel worse, even if they're not to blame.

I think they actually didn't care about the person who left maybe.

Maybe they don't want to be traumatized if it was someone they loved?

My own personal opinion is you have a moral duty to read a suicide note left for you. It's someone's final parting thoughts as they leave the world, and most likely contains the reasons they chose to ctb.
What if their reasons were that they were abused? Or that they are confessing to having done something bad? The note probably puts the gesture of their suicide into the relevant context.
Whatever the note contains the content absolutely should not go unheard for many many reasons.

I guess people are in different situations and it depends who the note is too in a way.I think the main reason why somebody wouldn't is because they are in a state of grief and they would find it unbearable which close family members might go through. I do see the importance in reading a suicide note that is addressed to you as it is likely to contain significant information relating to the person.

I don't see them being traumatized for reading a note unless the note is cruel towards them. I do it find it a tad hypocritical when others will cry about not having had the answers, but then when you're given them you don't even bother.

Yes, I heard previously a coroner sometimes if a note is too cruel simply not showing it to the family if it wasn't discovered. Regardless, not leaving a note is one of the worst things someone can do emotionally. So as along as the note isn't cruel there's no real reason not to read it, and I don't think it's a common risk to justify not reading someone's note.

Some people deserve a cruel note, but those turds don't give a shit about the person they destroyed & their note anyway

I think it's personal. Maybe it's too painful to think about reading yet. Maybe the loss is too much. I don't think it's anybody's business but the person who got the note.

Yeah they'd find it appealing that a death was about them in a way. Gives them some supply.

They have every right to not read the note if they don't want to, it can be an emotionally difficult experience and the person that wrote it is already dead.

It's pretty disrespectful not to read the note if you loved the person. I get that it's not an easy thing to do, but neither is facing the fact that someone you cared about is dead

I agree.

Should I be handed a suicide note of a family member or a loved one, I would muster the strength to read every word no matter how hard it will be. It's letting them speak for one last time.
