For me I have heard " Are you like safe to be on your own since you talk/try to kill yourself?"

"I don't want to have a relationship with you because I don't want any drama."

" So do you like cream pies? Lotta crazy chicks I knew said cream pies helped them feel better."

" If i fall asleep will you hurt me?"

really stupid shit

When people try to tell me they can fix me, especially in a short time.

"One summer at my house and you'll be happy in no time!"

"Depression? Get some p**sy bro."

"Man up and quit whining, you're such a downer. When I was your age I was happy to kick rocks!"
"If you try to kill yourself you'll set a bad example for others."
-A former boss
Rather set a bad example for others than go to work.

[TW: this shit is super extra mega horrendously ableist]

"go get a shrink fix your cerebral palsy."

bet dude got no fucking idea what cerebral palsy is.

Edit: lemme put this into context. I/we have alters and stuff. OSDD. one of our littles came to the front during a conversation and just replied to his messages. that's why he called us mad. 'kay but, only couple months before that he was literally pointing out the fact we have xyz presentations/symptoms. all of which are major indicators for having a dissociative disorder. I blocked him ever since but still find it hilarious how much he suffered his own ignorance.

The most offensive thing they say is that we are mentally ill, of course.
It is a crude metaphor for our ways of thinking-and-feeling, our responses to complex situations, to say they are "diseases like diabetes" or some shit.
Infinitely better for them to call me crazy.
Turn illness into a weapon.

i remember in sixth form (final year of high school is the equivalent elsewhere i guess?) when i had to disclose my mental illness/medication status to the head of my year, and he shouted at me once when i was walking past his office "have you taken your drugs yet?!"

it was so embarrassing, not necessarily offensive but i was so upset lol 😖

yep. I got a problem with the word "patient" exactly for this reason. it's dehumanizing. our every human needs, every behavior, words, and action become a "symptom" to be dismissed. it pathologizes the whole person, one's entire existence. so why not just take it to the radical end and reclaim it? "hey I'm a real nutter and I'm not giving in one inch, motherfucker."

or the age-old "won't you take your insulin if you're diabetic?" shit. MH is so goddamn complex, an integral representation of the lives that we live, and the brain is so tangible, plastic, malleable, sending alarms to us when in danger and serving us, it's not like couple pills gon be the solution when we're literally treated like shit. it only acts as a buffer. or sometimes straight-out kill this brain so we no longer complain 'bout suffering.

Wow, reading some of these (especially the "cream pie" remark, and the cerebral palsy remark), I think the things that people have said to me barely even rate!

The remarks that stuck with me are the ones that implied I was not actually mentally ill at all, but merely seeking attention or feeling sorry for myself. My mom used to always say I was just "being overly dramatic", but she came around after about a decade. Two men, both of whom were interested in me, said something along the lines of "there's nothing wrong with you, you just need to get laid". (No self-interest there, I'm sure, lol) One friend said something like "I dont know much about mental illness, and I'm trying to understand it better, but it seems to me that you are just looking for attention". I almost ceased my friendship with her right then and there. But, over time, I realized that despite her lack of understanding, she always stuck by me. She phones once a month or so, even though I make no effort to contact her. There were many people who said the "right" thing to my face, and either trashed me behind my back, or ghosted me, so I chose to just accept this particular person's limitations and move on. However, all the other people who said snotty or disingenuous things (including the "life coach" who had me watch a Tony Robbins vidéo in which he describes depression as "selfish") have been cut from my life. I know a lot of people don't understand, but I'm not taking the time to personally educate every single one of them.

I don't know if I have a mental illness or not. My dad once said to my mom: "He's not crazy, he just doesn't want to get off his fucking ass and go to work. He just sits around the house jacking around like a retard."

First time my mom found out, probably six years back or so, she basically said that if I was truly suicidal I'd have to get strapped down in an asylum (lol). My dad has always been more chill about it and I have been able to talk to him about it (no use though, he thinks that some unspecified thing is going to magically make my life good), as long as I don't go into specific methods.

Siblings have just reacted with neurotypical emotion, the few times they heard of it.

This beer is hitting right, been a long time since I drank more than one weak beer. I won't drink any strong stuff (since that makes me hit on female SaSu members or even cry-simp for several months at a time).

People are so awful and hateful. They just want something to laugh about. This world is all about getting dirt and intel on others so you can shit on them behind their backs and feel better about yourself. For that reason I keep my struggles super private. I think only 3 people in my life know what I deal with. I'd rather have people wonder what's going on with me than give them ammunition though, that's for sure.

I am sorry to read all these responses. Breaks my heart.

From my personal experience it is those without mental health issues who are often violent. I would consider the behaviour of your coworker(s) to fall under bullying, so ironically they are the ones who have "issues" - more so than you.

First thing that comes to mind is not acknowledging it, like you've said.
For example I say to a woman I have an eating disorder and she proceeds to ask me for low cal recipes and tips on how to get a disorder.
Or same statement with a dude who'll just look me up and down and say: "You look normal." (usually fine if it comes from curiosity and not with purpose of belittling)

A coworker said to me, totally out of the blue, "are you gonna shoot up this place?". And other people heard and snickered. Glad I left that place.
