I read an article about an old man who has both Parkinsons AND Dementia who has been approved for Maid.
Prolifer comment to this was "True compassion means walking with people through their pain, not abandoning them to a premature death, "Every life has inherent value, no matter the circumstances, and our society should be investing in excellent palliative care and support systems—not in policies that treat vulnerable people as if their lives are disposable."
My opinion is it is up to the person to decide if their life is valuable enough to want to live through a brutal illness. I mean who the fuck wants to go thru the end stages of dementia and the indignities involved with many other horrible diseases?? Palliative care can only do so much. MAiD is about choice and it's up to the patient to decide if their life is no longer worth living! Why do these prolifers care so much about others people's lives that they know nothing about?!

Im starting to find that a lot of people with these views on life are only doing it as a performative, to appear like a good because because they could never see death as less traumatic than certain situations or they think its worth every second because their only frame of reference for pain is like "i got dumped in high school and my friend brought me ice cream to cry with her" or "i broke my arm once and that the worst pain ever!"

They could never fathom immense unstoppable pain can happen because theyve never experience it or they knew someone who survived it ignoring what it cost them.

I want to die before my survival and well being relies on the hands of people that are strangers to me, my family wont look after me for sure

Somewhat along these lines but things like dementia are horrifying. Anything that debilitates at the end of life is. I see it as a benefit of ctb now, avoid any of this later. Parts of life are absolutely horrific.

Might seem harsh, but it's all about money. The longer they keep you alive, the more money they can get out of you.

These people lack empathy and don't know what true suffering is. They probably have a supportive family, friends they can talk to and get help from, and so on.

Every individual suffers in their own way, and nobody has the right to judge anyone, even if they think they know how it feels.

Watched my father suffer from 6 years of Alzheimer's Disease and now watching my mom suffer every possible way after her stroke. To end that suffering, to ease their dignity by being able to help them end their lives in a dignified way would be the humane and kind thing to do. They should have had a choice.

For myself, I want to choose my own death. I want to exit because I've seen what happens to the old and the vulnerable and the poor in America. It should be a choice without the bureaucracy and red tape and religious nonsense.

Unfortunately, it is called human nature. The old saying: " do not do as I do, do as I say".

Like me, if and when quantity overtakes quality of life because of chronic pain, choices will be made, and it is NOBODIES business but mine.

I am 100% pro-choice and let each and every soul find their own path with NO outside influence.

Another reason why I do NOT believe in organized religion, yes there is a GOD and a devil, but organized religion is all about money and power and do as I say and/or think, YIKES!

That is why there are dictators, read Putin, North Korean Kim Jong Un and more, CONTROL.

Let me be me and let you be you, perfect!

I don't get why people are sticking their noses in other people's business. It's not your life so why are you being so bossy?

I just never really understood why people are against suicide especially strangers that you don't know. Like I understand to some degree why friends/family would be against it but strangers? Like you don't even know that person, why do you care?

But I guess that I do agree with lighthousehermit. It's mostly performative and money ridden.

its no one else's business what i do with this body and brain they imprisoned me in .

We all die anyway and soon too because how fast did this year go by , how fast did the last 5 years go by? it's no one else's buisness when i want to escape this hell.

pain is so bad. imagine a giant steel gridle and underneath a lot of red hot coals on fire . the gridle is red hot. what if they forced you to place your finger on that scalding hot metal ? the pain would be excruciating and you'd want to pull away instantly but if they held your finger there the pain would be unbearabl just a tiny area of skin pain receptors produce that pain. then if the press your hole hand and held it to the searing red hot metal? the pain would be excruciating unbearable every second . they they placed your whole skin your whole body on the gridle and held you down on it the pain would be even more unbearable . what's worth even 3 minutes of that kind of pain>? what about 10 minutes? an hour ? 10 hours? years?

as bad as that pain is i thing there is pain a trillion times worse than that every second. to me nothing is even worth 1 second of the worst pain. but they tell me i have to risk such pain lasting every second for years . for what reason? i don't have to risk any pain nor any suffering much less unending constant unbearable pain. plus there is no objective reason to live another minute anyway. all these reasons sum up on top of each other . so it's unfathmobly evil that these people want to keep every one here even if they want to leave this hell.

As someone who has chronic illnesses and chronic pain, this angers me to the core.

When life gets too painful especially when it comes to something we can't control like disabilities, illnesses, and chronic pain, people should be given the dignity to have CHOICE. Heck, if someone gets a diagnosis of anything that is progressive and degenerative, they should be given the option: "You have this diagnosis and there is no cure, you will get worse over time. You have a choice now to continue and no judgement if you don't want to opt out. We'll help you make the transition peacefully."

People deserve CHOICE and autonomy over their painful bodies. Wtf.

Especially now since there is a war on pain medication and how pain is handled in the world.

Someone who is sick and in pain doesn't WANT to die like it's a joyful thing. When it gets to that point it's because life becomes too painful to live. And I feel like people should just accept that.

Once they experience pain that has no end, then they will finally understand why someone would be asking for death

A lot of these pro-lifers are religious. That's where a lot of that rhetoric comes from. In this case, i would have zero qualms with a guy that is getting Parkinson's or Dementia taking himself out before he becomes a vegetable that doesn't know who he is.

To them man is made in the image of god and they will keep you alive a vegetable for 40+ years if it means they don't offend their sky daddy.

I can understand their abortion stance somewhat, but keeping suffering people that want to die alive for your own religious bullshit is plain evil.

"Your life has inherent value, no matter the circumstances, which means you should be kept alive against your will. This is a feel good message btw. You're so valuable!" Yeah, I don't actually want to be a value-producing machine; that's bleak. I want to stop suffering.

It's one of those moments I'm wishing there was a 🤢🤮 emoji. This kind of thing makes me angry. How dare that person insist people should stay here and suffer. I wonder if they have even spent time around people with dementia or incontinence or crippling arthritus.

Absolutely, if they want to live- we should do our utmost to support them. One problem of course being- is there the money for it even? With an aging population and possibly less people choosing to procreate, some not working- who's paying for all this care?

Not that that should be a reason to bump the elderly off but, there's no way in hell I want to be in some council run nursing home one day. Even the nicer private ones have their issues. I worked in one for a while.

Presumably this person has enough capacity to make the choice though. Why is this other person ignoring their wishes? Just so it can fit in with their more comfortable notion of a compassionate society where everyone supports one another?

They should wake up. One of the reasons we have care homes is because many relatives don't want to or can't care for their elderly anymore. Many really aren't the caring communities we used to be. So- that leaves their loved ones being cared for by people doing 12 hour shifts in understaffed facilities on minimum wage. What do they think is going to happen? Do they really believe that person will get the support they need?

We shouldn't be using assisted suicide as a solution/ alternative to falling standards of care but, realism has to play a part too.

There's only so much we can do for a person in pain too. I'd like to see this person try and cope with a patient becoming physically and verbally violent while you try to clean them up after they have defacated over themselves. And, nothing you try to tell them calms them down. They're terrified and uncomfortable. I'd like them to experience that and then claim that person has a good quality of life.

I want out way before I reach that stage. If they want to experience that themselves though, then- good luck to them. I hope they're saving up for it already. It doesn't come cheap.

Honestly, Dementia and Parkinson's is the combination that has to suck so terribly. That man's nervous system is just slowly going out, making him suffer. So yeah even if you're anti MAiD you gotta agree that this is terrible.

These pro lifers would put their dogs down if they had similarly untreatable and degenerative (in the medical sense) diseases. Just saying

That is just so cruel and horrible, there's just so much extreme cruelty in how many humans wish to imprison others in this existence and torture them for as long as possible against their wishes.

It's truly horrific to me how suicide is a crime even know this existence that just causes harm and suffering with no limit as to how much one can be tortured was so tragically imposed, to me existence really is an abomination, it truly is the most dreadful prison like anti-suicide world where the suffering and torture of existing is seen as to force and prolong no matter what, all that anti-suicide does is just cause way more harm in this existence already so torturous.
