Fire corals belong to the Milleporina species. And contrary to popular belief, they aren't a true coral at all. Fire corals are actually marine organisms that form colonies and are closely related to the jellyfish family and stinging anemones. Fire corals are a hydrozoan (jellyfish) with a hard, calcified skeleton. Fire corals sting because its surface is covered in microscopic stinging cells called nematocysts which release sharp needles and venom when touched.
