We literally live in a dystopian "future" and it's only gonna get worse from here with the erosion of rights, privacy, and freedom under the guise of "safety" and "security."

I don't know how anyone can be optimistic of the future when shit is only going to get worse from here in every way. And the "people" are actually the ones who are brainwashed into wanting to give up their own rights, while those of us aware of the bullshit look on in horror.

CTB is looking better and better everyday.

It always amazes me that everyone is always talking about dystopian societies without even giving a second thought to the one we live in.

The majority of us will be expected to spend 95% of our adult lives doing things we hate, just for the basics like food, water and shelter. Why? So that the people we're working for can add to an ever growing number attached to their name that already declared long ago that they'll never have to worry about going without anything.

Our entire lives are based around adding to this number. We're trained to be good at making money for other people at a young age. We're told from childhood that our entire purpose in life is to make money, and make more people who will go on to make more money. If, for whatever reason, you can't work effectively, you're shunned by society and thrown aside. We get given this idea that if we work hard enough, we can be one of the people up at the top, but it's bullshit.

We're livestock, and like in all of those dystopian novels, we're trained to be oblivious and think that it's all a good thing, and taught to turn against people who think otherwise.

And it looks even more obvious when you fall down the bottom of the ladder. You see the people didn't make it, how their lives could get ruined by not fitting the mold and how so easy it is to slip. Human lives are getting more and more treated as resource each day. True Freedom is only available to the elite.

Deep thoughts. Perspective though, I’m happy not to see my baby starve to death or, bubonic plagued, or have to see him go die in a war.
im glad my parents didn’t sell me as a child bride to start popping out babies for a farmer. Our current place in history insulates me from all of those particularly nasty horrors in trade off for new, different ones of a higher scale of complexity.

Buuut I would argue that gives a challenge that can result in a higher development of that “spirit” than the less complex circumstances of a bygone era(intellect, emotional being, whatever) but it is miserable because we’re cut off from everything

As long as humanity is (relatively) free, it is on a fast track to extinction.
Try and stop that, and a dystopia results. Unless humanity suddenly goes against the natural order and becomes selfless.
What puzzles me is why people think this is anything other than natural.
Stuff can be both good and bad at the same time.

I finally woke up when I read about Edward Snowden. His reports are both challenging to your thoughts about this world, and so eye-opening.

No matter who you are, or where you are, if you have a presence on the internet, you are putting yourself in grave danger.

All it takes is one further step into filing down your freedoms and your life will be ruined. Pelosi, Obama, Dick Cheney. All of these people are both directly and indirectly responsible for this course of action, there are many more but my memory has lost me for a bit.

9/11 was the end of our privacy, both virtually and physically.
Is mass-surveillance good or bad? Well, that's up for interpretation. We are a dystopian oligarchy.

This is interesting. In another thread, I remarked that the future is miserable because we'll either go extinct or our civilization will more and more closely resemble a dystopic nighmare as time goes on. I'm not a huge fan of either scenario but I'd rather die than live in the more oppressive dystopias (some of which have corellaries in the modern world, in the form of nation states).

Freedom isn't attainable. We're not free in a state of nature, a more libertarian society, or a totalitarian regime. What you're really opposed to is disorder and risk. You'd have everything be maximally orderly and safe and you see the most effective means to that end to be totalitarianism. You see the overtly impositional characteristics of such a society to be worth such order and safety.

Our disposition are quite out of line. I take disorder and danger to be worth avoiding totalitarianism. The dilemma posed by the incompatability between these and similar dispositions could use more attention, in my opinion.

I mean, @KClown isn't wrong.
But I'd like to add that by freedom we mean freedom to open a business, freedom to move, to do whatever we want in terms of career paths.
Populations that have eradicated every kind of liberty have gone into a huge developement that won't be stopped.
China basically used its citizens as machines and that's how it improved its economy. I need X, I'll train thousands of people to do X. Switzerland, even if it doesn't seems so, drives every citizen to be a productive member of society. Children are driven to a specific career path according to their skills.

Honestly I still think freedom never existed in any state. Think about the freedom you have in the US (I just discovered about the Social Security Number), China, Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam are basically autarchies, Italy has an economic freedom index a little bit higher than China's. Maybe in the 80s, but of course it's easy to be free while spending money you don't have.

Eventually this dystopia will fall to make space for a new one, and so on until the end of times
