To voluntarily stop eating and drinking means to refuse all food and liquids, including those taken through a feeding tube, with the understanding that doing so will hasten death. This is an option for people with terminal or life-limiting diseases who feel that with VSED their dying will not be prolonged. One of the advantages of this decision is that you may change your mind at any time and resume eating and drinking.

You can live for a long time without eating, but dehydration (lack of fluids) speeds up the dying process. Dying from dehydration is generally not uncomfortable once the initial feelings of thirst subside. If you stop eating and drinking, death can occur as early as a few days, though for most people, approximately ten days is the average. In rare instances, the process can take as long as several weeks. It depends on your age, illness, and nutritional status.

At first, you will feel the same as you did before starting VSED. Hunger pangs and thirst may occur the first day, but these sensations are usually tolerable; discomfort can be alleviated with mild sedatives or other techniques such as mouth swabs, lip balm, and cool water rinses.

People who begin this process often express a sense of peace that they can finally "stop fighting." Some people describe a sense of euphoria or pleasant lightheadedness. There is an analgesic effect caused by dehydration that may explain this response. With dehydration, people often need less pain medication, urinate less, have less vomiting, and breathe more easily due to decreased congestion.

After a few days, your energy levels will decrease, and you will become less mentally alert and sleepier.

Most people begin to go in and out of consciousness by the third day and later become unarousable.

Since dehydration will most likely be the cause of death, it is important not to drink anything once you start. Even sips of water may prolong the dying process.

We recommend that all medications be stopped except for those for pain or other discomfort. Stopping medications for heart problems or diabetes, for example, may speed up the process.

You may change your mind and resume eating and drinking at any time.

I've tried this for one and a half day, but the urge to drink became unbearable and I began to see dreams about drinks. I found it to be very unpleasant and I can't see how you could maintain it for over a week. Maybe painkillers would help. Based on my experiences I don't recommend this method. What do you think?

This is a joke of a method that no one should take seriously -- not unless you are old and very frail / have a terminal sickness in its last stages. You also cannot pull this off without support from medical professionals/

It sounds like a horrible method, not one that I would choose to do. I think I would rather the ctb process be over quickly, it sounds awful dying slowly.

Until you try it yourself only you will know.So many successful stories. The Jain community practice VSED and hundreds of people die this way every year. But knowing India full of make up stories I know it is all lies.I did try this method myself,it is not possible because you will forget what your goal is.

From my limited knowledge it's only really a viable method if you are able to do it in a hospice setting where someone is looking after you and giving you meds. Or in a case you could get family to look after you. I've heard keeping your mouth damp with a moistened sponge is one thing to make at least the thirst easier.

At least in the US it is legal but I assume you'd need to have an illness that was terminal or hindered quality of life.

Yes this can be done with the help of others like in jain tradition called salekhanna. No way you can do it alone.People around you must remind you that you want to VSED and must force or encourage you to continue the process. You will hallucinate and keep on dreaming of ice cold drink.

I'm not sure if true, but there's a rumor going around in my family that my great grandma was depressed and old. She wanted to die, but didn't know how, so she quit eating and drinking. Just sat there until her heart stopped beating.
Have to keep in mind, she was probably in bad shape to behind with.

Some of dying symptom is absence of feeling hungry and thirst. It is a natural process of dying. Its different when your body still want to live but you deny food and drink

From what I was told she chose to do so. I never met the person, can't tell.

i'm barely eating but I don't know what would happen if I stopped.

I think it can then become uncomfortable too eat but then you're going into eating disorders etc it would take so long to die.

Normally people who is dying have no appetite to eat but are encourage to eat even that person don't feel hungry, that will prolong the dying process.
snake will stop eating n drinking when it is time to die and will not swallow any food even force feed unlike human.

Long time to die is better than lifetime to suffer if we are seriously want to CBT.

Seems extremely difficult. What if you kept taking a sleeping pill so that you slept through the entire process? Maybe sleeping pills aren't that affective.

I'm trying this but concerned my family will I intervene before I reach my goal. I tried hanging but was too scared to finish it. I can't go on so on need a method that works which I am brave enough to try ~ this seems the only one but it's very slow.
