  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice on things I can/need to do in order to prepare my affairs before ctb?

I guess there will probably be an autopsy?

I'm wondering whether if I write a suicide note, saying something like that I've chosen to do this, by myself with no help etc. that that will help with authorities? (Will there definitely be an autopsy or post mortem (I don't actually know the difference between the two))

Will they go through my stuff, like my phone/computer?

Are there any other administrative things I can do? Obviously I will make a will and arrange for someone to be the executor.

Is there *anything* I can write for my parents that will ease their trauma in any way? I'm 40, and doing this partly because my quality of life (due to disabilities) is just getting to a point where I can't put up with it any more. Also because I'm alone, and can't see any way that that can ever change, and really can't spend my life alone as it feels like torture to me and I've had enough of that in my life already as it is. I'm just.. tired of fighting. I've been fighting through abuse, rape, depression, more abuse.. So many things. I'm really just ready to be done, but I want to do things in a way which will minimise the trauma and/or difficulties for those left as much as I can.

Thanks.

I can't advise you on what to write in the note (well l could, but it'd be bad advice - I'm in a not dissimilar situation and l too struggle with this) - but yes, a cause of death would need to be ascertained. Every UK suicide results in an inquest, which is held in the public domain. There are campaigns at present to remove them from public view, for obvious reasons.

They may go through your phone, pc, etc - but this is unlikely to be in any real depth if the cause of death is pretty obvious, it's generally to rule out foul play, such as a murder made to look like suicide. People have left notes for the police to find to simplify this process, this would also mean the ensuing inquest is simpler and perhaps easier for your loved ones as a result.

In my country an autopsy is obligatory for ctb victims.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Like, to leave a note saying that this was something I did on purpose, under the influence of no other person, with the help of no other person - that sort of thing.

I've been thinking about this too. I'm a similar age to you and also battling disabilities that worsen no matter what I do.
Writing passwords down might be wise, that's as far as I've got.

Even if i leave a note, an autopsy will be performed with lab evaluations for toxic substances and alcohol and to seek for any diseases (ie. brain tumor etc).

Yes they do go through your pc & phone & anything else in your house, notes are seized as evidence during the investigation.

If you're not familiar with proper data deletion (multiple pass nuking etc) there's a very simple program included in Windows called BitLocker you can use to encrypt all data on your hard drive, just make sure it's turned off when you go and it's impossible to break.

Some android phones are full-disk encrypted by default I believe most Huawei and Chinese phones do this automatically, mine does, but you'll have to check your specific model.

Encryption is easier for non-techies imo & plus you'll still have your data if you come back for whatever reason.

I'm a Mac/iPhone user, I don't suppose you know any good encryption services for those please?

I believe the Mac alternative is FileVault, I think it's also included in Mac OS, just make sure you disable "recovery with icloud" as it can be reset by Apple.

I'm not sure what the deal with iPhones is anymore, I know they didn't used to co-operate at all but then they did secretly a few times and now they've changed it so they will police certain crimes like sexual abuse so it seems like they do have a backdoor they can use but I haven't kept up with what crimes they are co-operating with authorities for so I'm not as familiar.

There is no full-disk encryption alternative for iOS unfortunately, it would require root access, there might be a jailbroken alternative that can encrypt certain files but that's kind of useless tbh, you're stuck with whatever Apple gives you sorry, if you want to wipe your iPhone you can format a new firmware with iTunes.

They will also retain lots of logins & whatever you have on icloud for either 3 years in EU I think or 5 years in US but don't quote me, they will only subpoena for it if they believe the death is suspicious though.
