I know this is more than likely a silly question but I was wondering if anyone knew what happens if you went to a&e saying you were extremely suicidal due to a medical issue/condition.
Would they attempt to help you with it or is it more likely they would just focus on the mental health side of things and you'd just end up talking with a mental health worker or being assessed for mental health? And would they attempt to section you?
I'm curious to hear of anybodys experiences if they've attempting this approach rather than ringing crisis team etc.

I did this under intense pressure from my mother, even though I didn't want to; she coerced me into it. All that happened was that I spoke to a mental health worker about my situation, and they arranged for me to see a psychiatrist at a later date. That future appointment ended up being a huge mistake, because the psychiatrist was a completely useless twat, and I regret all of it. At least I now know how incompetent the mental health system here is. I can't promise that this will be your experience, but it was mine.

Edit: I didn't claim to be suicidal due to any medical issue because I have none (diagnosed anyway). I just claimed to be suicidal generally.

Thank you for confirming what I already suspected in the back of my mind.
Sorry to hear you had such a shitty experience and I fully understand you regretting it.I found the mental health crisis team to be equally as unhelpful a couple of months back and I fully regret being talked in to speaking to them so I can relate ha!

Please stay AWAY from the NHS. You will get sectioned under the mental health act and they will keep you drugged and isolated and deprive you of your liberty. The law was quietly changed during the holocough hoax. Whereas you needed 3 psychiatrists to declare you mentally ill, you now only need ONE and it can be a GP.

Same thing happened with me 2 weeks ago, I was told by my GP to go to A&E and the mental health team would be there for me. I was taken in for an interview with two workers, they were lovely and talked me through everything and genuinely seemed like they were concerned for me and tried to help me. They did offer that I could stay in the hospital for a week but said it might not benefit me as I would just be kept in the same place all the time and the feelings would still be there when I got out. They did however look into my medication and made my GP change some of it to help me sleep and such.

I think it depends which hospital you go to.
Usually you'd be seen by someone (or 2) from the mental health team. Depends on that person/people as to how seriously they take you. Sometimes you'll get a follow up appointment with your local CMHT psychiatrist, sometimes you'll be referred to your local Crisis Team or Home Treatment Team, occasionally you might be hospitalised if by some miracle there's a bed available.
But - I also only know from a purely mental health perspective, I don't have a medical condition. But then again, I imagine it is the mental health aspect they'll focus on if you go in because you are suicidal.

I had a friend who worked in ITU who was looking after a guy who'd jumped from a building and lost both his legs. The day before he was admitted he'd been to A&E and said he was going to kill himself. They sent him home. I know it's just a single case but it's put me off ever bothering.
