Being 38 I'm not exactly young. In the early to mid 2000s I used to frequent boards on the Internet before they got swallowed up by social media which happened in the late 2000s (maybe). Reddit seems to be a clever away around that - have one megaforum with individual forums. Anyway just thought I'd add that FWIW. Anyone else feel the same way? Most of you guys too young to know this - lol.
Also the preponderance of anime avatars makes me feel like a boomer.

I'm only 20 but I prefer forums like this over that Discord thing that everyone uses. I regret the decision to join Discord in 2016. It has lag, messages won't send even with good internet, interface looks like shit, you don't understand much from server chatrooms, it's hard to make and manage a server etc.

The devs of one of my fav games closed their forums and moved to Discord lmao. As if anyone can use that complex, childish shit. They didn't care that there are boomers who play that game and also used to frequent the forums and maybe aren't used to such instant messaging apps. Not to mention that on the forum there was important information and guides, good luck finding that between tons of useless messages and memes. I've a feeling that they moved on Discord because they weren't able to moderate the objective negative opinions on the game they were receiving from veteran players on the forum, it's easier on Discord with power abusing reddit-like mods ;).

I also got a bit of the taste of 2000s forums, chatrooms and apps like Yahoo Messenger (I still cry over YM's dissappearance, it was the best messaging app ever, I remember spending hours in YM Avatar, save my avatar then change my mind and spend another few hours there until I'd get satisfied). Aaand the chatrooms man. I met my first bestfriend around 2011 in a chatroom on a platform that was really big between 2008-2012.

Imo anime is for all ages, I mean there are mature animes that anyone could watch but indeed most of anime watchers are young and that's why anime nowadays is more targeted at teenagers.

Discord I feel is different to this; aimed at a different thing. So yeah the game devs stuffed up.

As for the anime; get out weebs!

But I feel social media swallowed up boards/forums on the whole - am I right? Not to say there aren't fringes.

Preach. I'm 40. Does the fact that they all look the same to me make me racist? :ahhha:

I'm the same age and I went from yahoo chat rooms and icq (remember that lol) straight to Facebook. Although I joined Facebook later than others my age because I thought it looked stupid. I don't understand Reddit and I find this super confusing. I still have no interest in Instagram or anything else like that.

I'm around your age and the internet has indeed lost all of its soul. Now it's a corporate controlled normie colony.

I'd say anime avatars were always common though, especially places like MSN and LiveJournal. That and passive aggressively posting song lyrics when someone pissed you off.

I'm quite young (22 years old) but I'm computer nerd fascinated with retro computing and I also think this website has cool retro vibes. Nowadays it's hard to see a forum with classic scheme.

Yeah I loved the old school messengers. When I was younger I would use them to hook up, they were like Flintstones Tinder. I even flew out to California in 2004 to meet a girl I met on Yahoo messenger, who ghosted me once I got there. Turns out she was lying to me about her appearance and didn't dare to face me at the airport. So she saw me there but didn't approach. I flew back home that same night, $1000 poorer. Good times.

Back in the day each band or hobby or whatever would have their own bulletin board. My main one from 2002 to 2008 maybe, was for the band Sparta, even though as time went on no one was really a fan of that band, more a fan of At The Drive-In the band that spawned Sparta. It just dawned on me now that it's demise coincided with the rise of social media. The board reminds me of this place - small so you can get to know each other (probably smaller than this place in terms of users).

I'm definitely old enough to remember the early Internet forums. I distinctly remember before Facebook took off. I enjoy Reddit a lot for its forum style. I like Discord but I can't keep up with the flow of conversation for long.
