Get a good education then I'll be successful and happy, get a good job and I'll be happy, get lots of money, buy a house, get a partner, etc...
People always think that their next future goal is going to bring them happiness, then they get there and realize they're still not happy, so they strive for a next goal thinking it'll make them happy, they live their lives full of stress and anxiety striving for an uncertain future and a dream, but they don't just live in the moment and be happy, they could be happy right now if they just stopped stressing and aiming for insane goals... I live life trying to find joy in everyday, so I can die saying I lived everyday happy... it's confusing cuz I still wish I was dead... the world is not made for people who just want to enjoy the here and now... but if I die I can say I had a good run while it lasted... I never had any self induced stress or anxiety... it was always the expectations of others and of society... pushing me to reach the next dumb milestone while I was happy just living in the here and now... people become brainwashed to follow the blind unwritten rules of life... like everyone had a list of what to do they just follow blindly... go to school for 20 years... go work for 40 years... get a house, a car, a partner, have children, people live life like it is all pre-determined... They reach the age of 60, and sure some nice things might have happened along the way, but once they finally get to retire and have some time to themselves... they realize they spend their entire lives stressed and anxious... some of them never even come to this realization and forever set new goals to achieve without ever just enjoying the moment and taking the time to unwind...
Just spend some time by urself... meditate... let all the stress and anxiety of uncertain futures and societies expectations flow right off of u, explore your mind and who u are, have deeper thoughts about who you are and what you wanna do, try live in the moment like every other animal on this planet. Once uve taken a couple weeks to wind down, try find a path that will lead to the best quality of life, stop having unrealistic expectations of yourself just because society expects it of u, only do what you really want to do, do the bare minimum to get by as long as it brings u the most joy, there's nothing wrong with a simple life, there's nothing wrong with not aiming for higher goals, find yourself and live the life you want to live, not the one society expects you to live.

I tend to think there are limits to this really. Most people have to work to afford to live and a lot aren't utterly content at work. You can try to centre yourself at work. Try not to hate it so intensely but, it's unlikely to be a thoroughly calm and joyous experience.

I think you can then often find- in your 'free' time that you are either tired from working or, preparing to work again. And, I've found- it doesn't matter too much what the job is. It could be a wage slave retail job, it could be running a department. All jobs I've tended to find- suck the life out of you. It's hard to be content and calm with a reality you despise to a certain extent.

I suppose the alternative is to try homelessness or, let someone else do the work and look after you but, that doesn't necessarily appeal or is even available to all.

I definitely agree though- to try where you can to follow your own heart. Rather than just do what's expected. It doesn't necessarily make us happy to do what others think creates a fulfilling life.

I don't think it's always self induced stress, I mean while we are alive, we need to be able to afford our lifestyle. Living in the moment cost money, and money doesn't come by easy for most. And I know you think those goals keep them stressed but some people feel a sense of joy when they're accomplishing goals and having the next planned thing. Not everyone is spontaneous, some are planners and that's how they feel a sense of calmness and joy.
