It is a contradiction(but I don't want to argue semantics). Within the context of what we do know it is "a" purpose of life but not "our" only purpose as you like to postulate....or that suffering serves us in the hereafter. That isn't a contradiction. Within the context of what we do know at this moment that is our purpose as it is the best path towards dealing with all the many negative potential possibilities we are aware of. Now if some higher power comes down tomorrow and explains how everything works then that would of course change, but that hasn't happened yet so we control what we can control; ourselves.
Nietzsche believed that in order to endure the hardships of human existence, it is necessary for individuals to believe that their suffering has a purpose.
To focus on 'meaning of suffering' is to avoid the fact we know a lot more about the nature of humanity in regards to evolution. In simple terms: we are animals.
You do not worry about what suffering means to a larvae, or bacteria, why should you worry about its meaning to a human?
This then means that there is no meaning, either in regards to meaning of life, or meaning of suffering. From the perspective of life, that means the meaning of life is whatever you make it to be. This then must also ultimately be the answer to any question regarding meaning of suffering, i.e. There is no meaning, but you damn sure can construct one, especially one that is harmful to your mental health.
Biologically there is only the production of offspring that can be said is the meaning of life. This then means that biologically the meaning of suffering must be for protection, to recognize a bad situation so you can get out of it.
Some suffering can make man more resilient but the amount of suffering that exists on this planet is beyond justification and beyond comprehension that can only be endured by being oblivious to it. Genocide, mutilation and things burning alive. The list goes on.
