I'm still reading the document, I've just discovered this gem in it and died laughing. It claimed the site's guide for hanging and jumping megathread were...

> Torture or the infliction of extreme violence or extreme
cruelty.

THEY CLAIMED IT WAS TORTURE! Who the hell wrote this!? Was it not reviewed? The content describes how to NOT get tortured but wait; it gets even better! The New Zealand government claims that this content on how to kill yourself classified as the following:

> Promotes or encourages criminal acts or acts of terrorism.

Was this not reviewed..? Did nobody think to check the site and make sure they aren't sending out false takedown notices? How could this even happen! It's just ouright hilarious how bad this document is. This thing has to be the funniest thing I've seen in a while. A country's government looked at sasu and thought: "Hmm, seems like terrorism!".

It's more funny than sad at this point a government is trying to censor information to their citizens by claiming it's terrorism. It's so bad that it's gold. It's in the same department as movies so bad they're good.

I just had to share this and make sure everyones read it, it's so ridiculous it's hard to explain the type of feeling I get from this. I am genuinely smiling and laughing for the first time in a while. It sort of feels like bliss and euphoria mixed together.

"promotes or encourages criminal acts or acts of terrorism" sounds like they're leaning into the "criminal acts" clause of that sentence. the common pro lifer argument is that the resources here encourage suicide (rather than just provide factual information) so I imagine this is the angle they are going with this.

Never seems to dawn on these folk that, for many, finding a group of non judgemental, supportive people who empathise with our feelings and experiences can well be the one thing which keeps us hanging on.

I find it hard to take anything like that seriously, for someone to actually believe that they must literally be insane, wanting to censor suicide method information is so inhumane and to me that is the true criminal thing as the right to die is compassionate, suicide is suffering prevention. As after all, only existence inflicts extreme cruel cruelty and it repulses me how they cannot recognise that nobody is obligated to stay here and suffer. People like that just cause even more suffering with their harmful beliefs.

I always wondered why there are so many "where are you from" threads and polls. Now I know why, and we're going to need a new one in a few weeks to get updated stats on NZ

Lol ok, NZ, want to prevent extreme cruelty? Let people who are going through extreme cruelty have the peace of a way out. They're forcing their citizens to experience extreme cruelty by not allowing them autonomy and choice tbh we should be the ones fining NZ according to their own laws smh.

I thought the sasu announcement was dope af too. Admins and mods here are the best.

My view of the situation has softened since I saw a picture of the committee responsible for drafting the legislation.

Ok... What is the streisand effect?
I've been lazy and copied from Wikipedia.

The Streisand effect is an unintended consequence of attempts to hide, remove, or censor information, where the effort instead backfires by increasing awareness of that information. It is named after American singer and actress Barbra Streisand, whose attempt to suppress the California Coastal Records Project's photograph of her cliff-top residence in Malibu, California, taken to document California coastal erosion, inadvertently drew greater attention to the photograph in 2003.

I live in New Zealand and we have very strict laws around suicide. I'm not sure if it's like this everywhere but here suicides can't be publicly reported or something unless there is permission from the coroner and the method of a suicide cannot be shared - like if a celebrity overseas kills themselves it'll obviously be reported but the way they did it can't be shared. It's also illegal to encourage suicide in anyway - even telling someone to kill themself is a criminal offence that can lead to 3 years in prison or 14 years if the person tries/succeededs. So technically by definition of New Zealand laws around suicide this entire site is against the law.

I wish the NZ government would spend their time actually trying to improve mental health support and services rather than trying to control what people do online. Some people will end their lives no matter what but I think there are many who end up on this site that with some help might not end up taking the final step of suicide.

Why the hell is NZ acting as if SaSu's in their jurisdiction?
If they dislike the site so much they'll have to block it themselves. Love what the admins are doing in that regard.

It's more funny than sad at this point a government is trying to censor information to their citizens by claiming it's terrorism. It's so bad that it's gold. It's in the same department as movies so bad they're good.
