Ligotti is a genius in that: it matters not whether one holds optimist or pessimist views, either way, his 'taper' is what will happen in the end. To have been born on the final tip of the Homo sapiens outgrowth of abiogenesis & natural selection... godspeed and congratulations to them, sure wish I could have been born into their ranks (if I had to have been born Homo sapiens at all). Doesn't Ligotti essentially copy Zapffe's general prediction?

You'd probably like Children of Men, the movie functions on a similar premise, that humankind for some reason can't have children anymore, albeit for biological and not ethical reasons, still I think the reality presented would be far more likely than any voluntary human extinction, unfortunately.
